Opinions on Nanny Cams

I was just on the parents boards reading about nanny-cams. To be honest, I never thought about getting them even if I do decide to have someone watch my son in our home. They seem so intrusive to me. Maybe I will change my mind. I can understand having them if you are concerned someone is hurting your child. But I have been a nanny in the past and would be upset if someone was recording me and than said, "oh you didnt play with my baby enough today," especially when I know I am a good nanny. What are your thoughts?

Re: Opinions on Nanny Cams

I believe the OP issue was not that her nanny didn't play with the baby enough, it was that she put her in a swing or kick and play for 2-3 hours while she was sitting on the couch and talking on the phone.

As far as Nanny cam... It is every parent responsibility to have one in order to protect their child. You can't trust anyone, no matter how good the recommendations are, with the life and well being of a tiny baby who can't complain to you or protect himself. Not having surveillance in the house with a new nanny is parental neglect in my book.

I will not go into details because I already posted this story one, but last year we hired a nanny and when she took our son outside for a walk, DH and FIL followed her. They learned that not only was she not doing what she was suppose to, but she took him inside her house while he was suppose to be out side getting fresh air and playing. I shudder to think I would happen if we didn't have her followed.

Wow, it is true you don't know unless you take measures to really find out. I personally think a nanny cam is a must if you are having someone in your home unattended.

Re: Opinions on Nanny Cams

I understand why someone uses them but if I was worried all day about the care my baby recieved I would not be able to work. This is probably why I don't have a nanny for Molly. I probably need one for Jason (since daycare might be hard with the possiblity of him getting sick) and I just can't find one I like. I am just not super comfortable with the whole idea. It works for some moms but not for me.

Re: Opinions on Nanny Cams

I was just speaking with a woman at work and also read and understand your points. I never thought of a nanny cam, but it is a way to ease your mind while you are at work to see how someone is treating your child when they are not infront of you. I will have to look into nanny-cam's more. I looked at it from my perspective and that I was a great baby-sitter and nanny and would feel offended if I felt like someone didn't trust me especially when I LOVE their children and treat them like my own. But I also understand that not everyone is like that. Plus I am sure when it comes time for me to have to make that decision, I will feel differently.
