Organic milk/ expiration date
I noticed that the expiration date for certain brands is much longer than other brands. Anyone know why?
I just bought a gallon yesterday and it expires at the end of August.
That just seems like such a long time from now. Why does it last so long?

I think with the organic they ULTRA pastuerize it so it has a longer shelf life. I noticed that too...

Re: Organic milk/ expiration date
Im not sure why they vary like that.
I could be wrong on this, but I always assume the exp date is the date if unopened. So once I open it, I only use it for mayber 3-4 days not til exp date. I usually buy 2 half gallons at TJs. I open one and that usually only lasts about 3 days anyway. Then I open the next one. I dont buy a gallon because with 1 kid it will take longer to use up and I dont keep milk that long once opened.
ETA: I just read some answers and didnt know that.. pretty cool. although Im still crazy and wont keep it that long opened

Re: Organic milk/ expiration date
I was curious about it too. We looked into it and its b/c regualr milk is heated to a certain temp to kill "most" but not all of the bacteria and such. The Organic milk is heated to kill "ALL" of the bacteria. Or, Ultra pasteurized. They do that b/c Organic milk travels further from farm to store, your house and needs to last longer. In the long run, I couldn't be happier...not that it ever lasts more than a week in my house!
