Other than a google search, what's the best way to look for
a psychiatrist? A friend who does not have insurance has asked for help in finding someone to speak to (requested a psychiatrist but I'm not sure if they know the difference btw that and a psychologist, so now I'm not even sure which to search for).
Being that the person doesn't have health insurance, cost is an issue. (and since they don't have insurance, I can't go my usual way of searching, like calling my insurance co or if they had one, theirs, for recommendations).
Besides google searching and randomly finding someone that way, what would you recommend in terms of searching?
Would have to be in NYC (Manhattan or Queens). Thanks for any ideas and help! I really want to help this person and think it's a GREAT idea that they want to see someone!!

I would call any psychiatrist in the area that you want and ask if they have any recommendations that they can give. I wouldn't be surprised if they told you of someone.

Dept of health and mental hygeine has services... I'd start by calling 311 - they are usually SUPER helpful and can put her in touch with the right agency?
Yesi just spotted this: LIFENET: 1-800-LIFENET (1-800-543-3638); 1-877-AYUDESE (en Espanol); and 1-877-990-8585 (Asian-speaking populations) are toll-free, confidential help lines that provide callers with information on and referrals to mental health and substance abuse resources throughout the New York City area. LIFENET operates 24 hours per day / seven days per week. For more information on LIFENET, click here.

Thanks! I didn't know webMD had that option and I will def try to call LifeNet and see if they can recommend someone (I don't believe they have any kind of substance abuse issue, but so long as they can recommend someone, that's great).
I've been googling and it's like - do I just pick a random name and give it to my friend?? I just want to help the best way I can, you know?
Thanks everyone!!!

OMG THANK YOU COLETTE!!!! I just called them and they were great! They asked a few simple questions (which I thankfully knew the answers to!) and gave me 3 referrals less than 1 mile from where my friend lives!!!!
I'm so SUREEEE the person on the phone thought it was for me and I was just saying "my friend" lol, but who cares! So long as I can help, I don't care. Oh and they also gave me two referrals for obtaining low cost health insurance so I am going to pass that along too!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!
