Our baby is nocturnal. How do you switch sleeping habits?
Maybe I should just get used to sleeping during the day and staying awake at night.

babies won't know the difference between night and day for a few weeks. you can try getting them used to night and day by establishing a day/night time routine...maybe put on some bedtime lotion, change into pj's, bed time book, etc. in the day time you can open up all the curtains, say goodmorning to different objects, babies thrive on consistency. getting them used to these day time and night time routines might help them "get" it when it finally clicks in them that day is day and night is night.

You have to teach the baby day from night. Inside you, everything is the same! During the day, keep everything bright and noisy. When it is time for bed, dim the lights and quiet the house. It will take a few weeks, but they eventually get it!

Eventually after just a few weeks Emerson figured it out and started to sleep more at night. In the meantime I napped whenever I could and got use to only a few hrs. sleep a night at a time.

Try to make the day time hours bright and stimulating. Don't walk around being quiet when the baby is napping----day is a time for activity. At night, make sure you keep the lights low and don't provide much stimulation. Don't play with the baby or interact too much. You want the baby to get the message that it's a time for quiet and rest.

I agree with this. During the day, my DD naps in her pack and play and the house is as noisy as normal. When people come over, I specifically tell them to speak in their regular voices, etc. I know an above poster mentioned establishing routines. This is very important also so that the baby learns what to expect. Eventually, the baby will get it!
Definitely rest when the baby is napping!!

Re: Our baby is nocturnal. How do you switch sleeping habits?
I responded to another post of yours about swaddling, but this is how we established bedtime early on. After his *last* bottle, I swaddle and read bedtime stories. I actually read the same two every night so he gets used to the pattern. Our routine is bottle, digest/cuddle, PJs, swaddle, story and down. He is only 9 weeks old, but I have been doing this since about week 2 or 3, and I feel like it works...for now! Good Luck!
Routines help, but at such a young age, I believe your baby will adjust eventually. Hang in there, and nap when DC naps!
