Our newborn in NICU due to low glucose issues... any experience?
Our two day old baby boy is now in NICU due to low glucose levels. They have him on an I.V. It's ripping my heart out to see him all hooked up like this. They are monitoring him and giving him glucose via I.V. I'm praying his levels get back to normal by the time I leave Sunday or else he may have to stay here an extra day or so. I was trying to BF him, but now have to give him mostly formula. I started pumping this morning.
Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm just so upset he can't be with me in my room and that he's going through this and I feel helpless.

I dont have any experience with low glucose, but my twins were in the NICU for 8 and 13 days. I know, its hard. Very hard. Only a NICU mom can understand. All I can say is if you to BF to start pumping now on a regular schedule. Will they let you take him out to try and BF again?

Re: Our newborn in NICU due to low glucose issues... any experience?
My DS was in the NICU at Winthrop for the same thing. My advice is DON'T let them bully you into giving formula if you want to BF!!! They did that to me and I regret it every single day, it caused so many problems. Because of that, we then had latch issues when he was latching fine originally, my supply came in really late because I wasn't able to BF properly (they wouldn't let me, they gave me 20 minutes to BF AND give him a bottle). My midwife was FURIOUS when I told her at my 6 week appointment, and it is illegal for them to say you have to give formula. You have EVERY RIGHT to BF if you want to!!!!!!!!!! If your DS is on an IV, he is getting the glucose and his levels will come back up. There is no need for formula if you are comfortable with just BFing. You can also ask your OB to not release you right away, they can make something up for the insurance company (the OB in my midwife's office was willing to do this). I told them I am not leaving without my baby!!! Sorry for the rant, I have a lot of resentment towards the NICU doctors and nurses at Wintrhop because of the way they treated me.

No experience with low glucose levels, but my DD was in the NICU for 3 days after she was born. She was vomitting green bile and they susspected that she had sepsis. It is a heartbreaking experience and I wanted to offer you lots of . I hope everything turns out ok.

Re: Our newborn in NICU due to low glucose issues... any experience?
Yup! DS was born almost 4 weeks early so they tested him right when he was delivered and a few hours later as well and found he was having a problem stabilizing his blood sugar level. He was in NICU from Saturday night to Wednesday morning. And we've had no problems since.
I absolutely know how you feel looking at your newborn baby in such a place with monitors & IV's but just know your stay there will be quick and once it is over - it's over.
ETA: The hospital I stayed in was so wonderful - they found a room for me to stay even after I was released so I would go in every 3 hours to BF.

Re: Our newborn in NICU due to low glucose issues... any experience?
My youngest was sent to the nicu for the same issues 12 hours after birth. She was in the nicu for a day, but moved to the step down nicu for the rest of the time.
After 24 hours she was fine, and came home with me. It's just a precaution.

Re: Our newborn in NICU due to low glucose issues... any experience?
My boys were in NICU for low sugar.
It was horrible for me, I had a c-sec and was not able to leave my bed so I only got wheeled down once to see them.
One made it out the next day and then baby A, make it out day two.
it was the scariest and saddest thing for me to see but I knew they were in good hands, and they were both healthy boys ready to go home.

this is intersting b/c I had made it clear to the nurses at my hospital that I wanted to try BF'ing; (they asked me ten times on the maternity tour and a few times during the day of my induction.) after DS was born and taken to the nursery they bottle fed him flormula. I was told this a few hours later when they wheeled him into my room that nite that they gave it to him b/c his sugar was low. I tried for a week to BF and between not latching and very little milk coming in, I gave up.
Totally off topic, but the glucose thing will probably work itself out in a few days. Prayers to you and your little one!!

Re: Our newborn in NICU due to low glucose issues... any experience?
My DD didnt have to go to the NICU for it but she did have low blood sugar so they gave her formula (which I didnt approve or know about till later ) Meanwhile I had made it extremely clear that I wanted to BF.
The lactation consultant and the nurse (who gave her the formula) were actually fighting about it. The lactation consultant said that BFing can help w/glucose levels, skin to skin contact as well. Giving her formula was NOT the only option so dont let them tell you that.
Hope she gets better soon!

Re: Our newborn in NICU due to low glucose issues... any experience?
this is VERY common for larger babies! i know that you said your son was born at 9.7 lbs
honestly, what they need is nutrition in order to stabilize their blood sugar. eating, (BF or FF) is the MOST important thing right now in order to get him home with you!!!

Lots of
My son has been in the NICU for 6 weeks so far so I know how helpless you feel and how awful it is to see him like that. I'm sure that your little boy will be fine and will be home very soon! Try to pump every 2-3 hours to get your supply going and don't lose hope about being able to BF.
Congratulations and good luck!!!

Re: Our newborn in NICU due to low glucose issues... any experience?
My DD was born at 36w2d and was in the NICU for 4 days due to low glucose. I tried bfing her and spoon feeding her colostrum and giving her formula. They finally took her 12hrs after birth. The 1st 2 days she had an iv and that was hard, but we just feed her as often as we could be there and held her a lot. I knew all her nurses from my job so I was not worried at all. The day I was discharged she was placed in the step down NICU and did well. By the 4th day we went home. Her problem was she didn't want to eat. She would refuse the bottle and so that's why they needed the IV. At that point I said give her whatever you can formula, a paci, whatever...encourage her to suckk on something and i'll worry about bfing later. It is scary, but it'll be fine I promise. Get rest and know she is in good hands!

I have a lot of resentment towards the NICU doctors and nurses at Wintrhop because of the way they treated me.
My newborn was in NICU at winthrop for 2 days due to a high temp, I too had issues with the NICU nurses wanting to give formula - in the end I caved - the nicu discharged her and put her in the regular nursery and I was able to room in with her for a day (since i had a c sec I was there 4 days) - at that time I requested the lactation consultant, Betty, come and she was excellent - spent a full hour with me and DD helping me to figure out the latching part. I had a few problems once I was alone, but thankfully got over it and we are exclusively breastfeeding now and DD goes back and forth between breast and bottle.
ETA - I did pump from the very beginning as I was a csec I couldn't leave the bed to visit the nicu at first- keep up the pumping and talk to the lactation consultant)
Hugs to you - I was a complete mess when DD was in NICU - I couldn't stop crying at first (no thanks to the unfriendliness of one of the nicu nurses in particular). I know how hard it is and your hormones are all over the place. Hope your little one gets discharged soon.

Re: Our newborn in NICU due to low glucose issues... any experience?
My dd had the exact same thing! We had already started breastfeeding & she actually refused the bottles of formula (I watched the nurse literally try to force feed her a bottle and lost it). After several failed attempts at getting her to take a bottle, she got an iv and I wad able to bf while she was on the iv. Once my milk came in it helped get numbers & she came home with us! The Nicu nurses are passive aggresive and kept trying to get me to stat in my room at night and they would feed her, but I wouldn't have it! I hit up and went to the Nicu every 3 hours round the clock, even just to watch the nurse try to feed her the bottle! I also put her to my breast everytime I went! Don't let them bully you out of bfing, from my experience if your dc is on the iv, there is no reason to give formula, once your milk comes in it should be fine! Drink LOTS of liquids!! I had a c section so I got to stay a 4th night, and dd came home with us after that! I hated having get in the Nicu & cried everytime I left her so I know how hard it is. What hospital are you in? If dd had to stay, I planned to stay on the Nicu all day and most of the night. St Charles let's parents with kids in the Nicu hang out in the Nicu as long as they want! Hang in there, it will get better!!!!

The nurses did the same thing, they gave my DS formula AND a pacifier without my consent. And they (the doctors too) made me feel like I was harming my baby by wanting to BF. I was so exhausted and distraught that I gave in to their bullying but I said I will BF first and then give formula. I've heard of this happening before at Winthrop. It left a bad taste in my mouth.

I have resentment toward the Nicu nurses at St Charles too! With my next dc, I'm going to be even more adamant that no formula be given! I was lucky in the fact that I had a csection, and the awesome nurse in my recovery room gave me the baby and helped us latch, so the 1st thing my dd had was colustrum from me, and that's probably why she wouldn't take the bottles they tried to give her! I really wish bfing moms got more support! After I was discharged, I found the copy of the breastfeeding moms bill of rights the hospital gave me, and I plan to bring it with me next time around!! There need to be better laws regarding nurses just giving formula w/o consent!!!

Re: Our newborn in NICU due to low glucose issues... any experience?
I cant quote the long post since I am on an ipad. But I wanted to add to the OP if you really want to BF then push for it. I was at Winthrop too. A total mess after having my babies almost 6 wks early after being admitted for cholestasis and pre-e after 9 wks of bedrest due to a short cervix and a separated pelvis, I didnt have the strength to fight for what I wanted all along. To BF. If thats what you planned to do all along, then please do it! Dont get bullied and broken down like I was.

I posted earlier with my expereince, but I want to say that you CAN still give baby bm and formula and there is NOTHING wrong with that! If YOU 100% DO NOT wnat that then tell them and be strong, BUT if you are ok with the paci and formula that's ok too! I told them to do whatever and they added formula to the milk/colostrum I had and it was fine. She was 4wks early so I truely believe our issues with bf were age related since at 8wks she just latched right on and nursed for 4months! I pumped that whole time and I NEVER EVER regreted them giving her formula. I did not want her in there 1 minute mor ethen she needed to be and I, personally, did what I thought was best. I have NO regrets!

Re: Our newborn in NICU due to low glucose issues... any experience?
Sorry that your baby is in the NICU! Mine was in the NICU for a different reason, and it was such a strange feeling to go home without him. I tried BF'ing DS in the NICU, but he had latching issues and was slightly tongue-tied. The NICU was good about letting me try to BF first, but then insisted on formula. I think it was because of going back and forth between formula and BFing that he had nipple confusion. I ended up EP'ing for him. Hopefully your baby gets to come home with you

Hugs to you and your baby!
My son was in the NICU for low blood sugar also and they gave him formula and I was upset. The nurse in the NICU at Winthrop was being really snotty about it to me. I was adamant and stayed by his side for about three hours when some nice nurse suggested I BF him and then they gave me the pump so I could give him some for the morning feeding. He was only in the NICU overnight but I remember they didn't even suggest pumping after they took him away from me to bring him to the NICU. I would have been pumping all night if they would have suggested it! I felt a little helpless. Thank goodness I didn't have any BF issues though after that!
