our taxes are still showing 2 old exemptions...what should we do???
we bought our house last may..the previous owner was a senior citizen and a veteran and got both exemptions. now, when we went to closing, we signed all the papers which CLEARLY showed we weren't elegible for either exemption.
we're still getting them and don't know what to do. we don't want to bring it to their attention....then we'll get hit with back taxes. we don't want to ignore it...eventually it'll catch up to us.
what should we do??? we NEVER misrepresented ourselves and did all the necessary paperwork at closing. i get the previous owner's mail, and he got a thing months ago asking him to renew the exemptions and i ripped it up and threw it out.

It will probably take to the next tax period. I am not sure where you live. We closed last april (live in suffolk) and our dec bill still had the previous owners name on it even though we applied for star and they accepted our application for this upcoming year. I am hoping the new bill has our name on it. My guess is if you live in suffolk it will probably straighten itself out in december. if the previous owners name is still on the bill it won't change until they input your information. If the bill has your name on it then that could be a problem and you may want to bring it to their attention as not to be hit with back taxes.
If you live in Nassau it may not be until this October bill that it straightens itself out. It seems to take the towns a cycle to get the information in the computer. I hope it all works out.

Since in my experience all the towns in Nassau County are as slow as anything I would wait for the new bill in October because if you applied for star when you moved in then your star wouldn't kick in till this October anyway and that is when they will probably straighten it out. Otherwise if you leave it with the double exemptions I would just save the exemptions money just in case they catch on in the middle and require that you pay. Good luck I hope it all works out.

there really is nothing that you can do. sooner or later they wiil realize (probably in July b/c that is usually when they reasses) and then charge you for the back taxes. This happened to us. we just saved the $ over the course of the year so that we could pay it when we were charged.
