Owners Home when viewing a house.

What is the deal with owners being home when you look at house for sale. We scheduled with our realtor days in advance.....one owner cancelled our appt on Saturday because they were going to be out of town. We rescheduled for Sunday and they were home. They sat outside in the front the entire time. It's such a turn off and makes me feel rushed when looking at a house.

Owners Home when viewing a house.

Any houses we looked at for our first house.... all were home. Our first house we bought the owners were home and sat downstairs they were home for that and the inspection they just watched TV. This house we saw at an open house and our friends live next door. They knew the previous owners well and were home for subsequent visits. I didn't mind because we all worked together for the sale and closing. The people who bought our house, I went for a walk when they came because my kids are wild

Re: Owners Home when viewing a house.

I always hated that. One lady showed us around with our realtor! She was going on and on about her master bathroom (which was horrific) and we had to be like “oh yea, it’s great”. Plus the house was filthy and I didn’t wanna touch a thing.

I find it very weird. I was never home when we showed our house. I had to take my two dogs (sometimes 3 if my BILs GF at the times dog was over ) and drive around til the realtor text me to come back.

ETA: the house I live in now, the owner was home but she was a million year old lady and she just sat in the living room. I didn’t expect her to leave.

This reminded me of one house we looked at the weekend before. Guy kept talking about how much money he just put into the house which to me meant he was prob asking too much for his house to recoup what he spent.

Re: Owners Home when viewing a house.

When we sold our last house, if we had something to do that we needed to be home for, we stayed home but out of the way. We never walked around with the potential buyers, but if they had a question, it was often helpful to give them the answers right then rather than having to email through the agents.

Also, we were selling when we had 2 small kids. If they wanted to see the house at 7pm on a Tuesday, we were home. We'd sit in the dining room and eat dinner, but we were not about to uproot the kids and have 2 cranky toddlers the next day.

As a buyer, it never bothered me if the owners were home. If they wanted me to buy their house, then I was going to take my time, open every closet, and not worry about them. The house we bought, the owner was always home because they had a dog so someone would keep the dog away from us. It was a liability safety issue. No big deal for us walking through.

the house we ended up buying the owners were not home for the first showing but were there for the second viewing and they walked around with us. It actually ended up being to our favor bc they had multiple offers on the house and chose us just bc they liked us the best lol

When I was looking last year, most of the time the owners were not present, but at a few houses they were. Definitely makes it a little awkward, but it didn't bother me too much. The homeowners were present both times I looked at the house I wound up buying.

In a sellers market having the opportunity to connect with and charm the owners may work in your favor.

Re: Owners Home when viewing a house.

I always tried to be gone when people were coming to look at our house but with 3 kids and a dog it was hard sometimes. Plus after a few weeks of it being on the market I became less worried about being there. I would always stay in the backyard out of the way. I was home when the people who ended up buying our house were looking. It worked out well I guess because the wife asked me alot of questions about the schools, neighborhood and library.

I just sold. I have young kids and a dog and we had multiple showings a day. It was impossible for me to leave. I either sat in the backyard and then moved to the front when they came outside or went for a walk. Almost Every potential buyer came to find me to ask some questions so it never occurred to me to leave fully. I thought I was being helpful Chat Icon

We just sold our home within the last year, we were home almost every time someone came to look at it. I stepped outside with the kids and dog. Couldn't have bothered too many people, we had 4 offers and went into contract within the first week, LOL!

Thanks! We actually put in an offer on one of the homes where the owners were home. Dh actually struck up a conversation with the owners since one of their kids went to the same college DH and I went to.
