Painting molding...

If I want to paint over our ugly brown molding, do I HAVE to remove it or can I just mask around it? I have too much molding so I don't want to remove it. Thanks!

Re: Painting molding...

Just paint it. I wouldn't go nuts removing and painting and then put them up again. Even typing it made me tired lol

Re: Painting molding...

you might want to quickly sand it a bit (but don't take it down).

Re: Painting molding...

You could actually risk it splintering and breaking if you remove it and then paint it.

So definitely tape it off and have a ball. If it is finished wood, make sure to either sand (as another poster suggested) or prime it first.

Yes, make sure you do prime it first, especially if it is a darker wood, and you want to paint it a lighter color.

Re: Painting molding...

if you plan to take it off i'd put on new moulding but i'd just paint over it with it still on if you plan to keep it. it will take a few coats though! i don't even mask it, but then again, i free-hand everything when I paint!
