Parents inviting you to be a friend on Facebook...

Has this happened to anyone? This particular parent I love...her son is one of my favorite students...but it just seems kind of like crossing a line, no? My friend has accepted parents of her students...and all of sudden it makes me realize I better watch what I write her on her wall!Chat Icon

Is there a way to accept her without her seeing regular status updates? TIA!

You can customize your settings and limit what they can see. I have former students as friends on FB, and they are blocked from my status updates, certain photo albums, and any pics where I've been tagged.

But IMHO, I would't be FB friends with a parent of a current student.

As you know, I'm not a teacher, but I wouldn't do it. It's along the same lines as I wouldn't friend my boss or anyone on the team I work on as FB friends. I have a few co-workers as friends, but they ARE my friends IRL, kwim?

No way would I accept a request from a parent or current student.

I am friends with some of my students from my old school.

I was young when I started there (22) so they are all @ 20, 21 now and I no longer work in the school or district.

I am all for being friendly with parents, but I would just worry, that even with all the privacy settings, that there would be the potential for disaster.

Personally, I wouldn't accept her at all. If you accept her and block her from certain things, she might know and that could cause problems.
I think it's simpler and safer for you to just tell her that you make it a policy not to accept parents or students as friends. You've got to be careful with Facebook.

I agree...the only thing parents have is my email at work.

I would never accept a parent as a "friend." FB is my outlet to communicate with my friends and family...I don't need to be worried about everything that I type...

Re: Parents inviting you to be a friend on Facebook...

This is the reason I don't have facebook...my life is my life, and I don't need business and personal mixing. I teach High School and that's always the first question they ask, if I have facebbook. I don't need them seeing pics of me at the bar or wherever, let alone parents!

I know you can set it to private, but I'm paranoid and assume someone will figure a way around that LOL.

OK, so 2 days after posting this, I went and created a FB account. I left off my last name though, so hopefully none of them will find me Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Parents inviting you to be a friend on Facebook...

I had a request from a parent, and there is no way I would ever accept. IMO it's crossing the line between profressionalism and personal life. Also, it's not fair to all the teachers I am friends with....why should they have to watch what they write, etc. I think it's just asking for trouble.

And this parent happened to be someone I would probably have been friends with....if I wasn't their kids teacher.

This happened to my co worker. A single dad tried to facebook her. I thought it was creepy, she ignored the friend request. I honestly wouldn't want to be facebooking with my students' parents.

If you feel bad telling her no....I would tell her that your dept or even the district frowns upon social networking between faculty and students/parents. This way it's not because you don't want to be her friend kwim

I wouldnt accept it. If they question it or send another request just say that you arent allowed to for professional reasons.

When kids request me (if they can find me cause I use my maiden name at work haha) I always send a message saying I cant accept them until they graduate. Most of them forget by that time (I teach 8th grade) but I do have one ex student as a friend that is currently in college. Love her!
