Parents of boys who are a little older
Let me start by saying, I am always honest with my DS, I use real name for body parts and he has know what his penis is since he was probably 16 mos old. We say Penis, if he asks what girls have I say vaginas....that's just what I feel is right for us. Anyway, Lately when DS gets an erection he asks me, "mommy why is my penis big?" I have been saying that just happens sometimes and he accepts that. Is that the right way to answer that question? Should I say more? He has an incredible vocabulary, but I don't know what more if anything to say. Help!!!!

Re: Parents of boys who are a little older
how old is he?
If he's older than 9 or 10 I might explain a little further but if he's younger, I would say something along the lines of "boys and girls bodies are different and work in a different way and sometimes that happens."
I pride myself on ALWAYS being honest with my kid starting from when he was little.
I recently got a compliment on him from his Asst. Principal about how interesting he is and what he talks about. And that (the AP) can always tell the kids whose parents REALLY talk to them.

Re: Parents of boys who are a little older
It's fun, right?
Robbie never asked - he's a quiet, private type. Noah DID mention that sometimes his penis 'vibrates' or 'bounces' - and he wants to know why. I actually didn't need to cover it because my older son piped in "That happens when you have to pee or if something makes you really excited or happy."
He meant excited in the most innocent way (I hope).
That explanation was good enough for Noah. And on Saturday - when I had a group of friends over - Noah decided to announce to everyone that he had a very happy penis and it was buzzing. So.. after you explain, you may want to also tell him that he might want to keep the state of his penis between him and his shorts.

That is hysterical and totally something DS would do.
I guess I should have mentioned his age, he is only 3 1/2. But because he is curious I don't want to make up some nonsense and for fear of what he will tell his teachers I don't want to say too much.

just say that some things happen in our bodies that's hard to explain... later on, if he asks should be when you go a little deeper.

Re: Parents of boys who are a little older
SS is 13, he has never asked me these questions, those go to DH.
But I did want to share a funny story. A co-worker of mine told me about one morning his 5 year old son came into their bedroom in just his undies. Co-worker says to son, "hey Bud, you pitching a tent?" His son looks at him confused, then co-worker nods towards him and says " see you are pitching a tent"
Then his son replies "What it's just stretching!"
So maybe at this point you can tell him it is stretching
