Parents that have had their child evaluated by the school district..

We just finished all of Ava's evaluations, and will be meeting with the committee in 2 weeks. What can I expect? It all seem so intimidating!!

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks, Tara

It DOES seem intimidating, especially when you are at a table with a bunch of people talking test scores, etc. Basically they will make a recommendation for services and you will either agree or disagree with what they are willing to provide. If everyone is in agreement, it's usually a brief meeting. Have the therapists advised you as to what they would be recommending? If not, I would ask them prior to the meeting.

Is it a CSE or CPSE? School aged or preschool? I assume CPSE. Depending on the district there can be just one wonderful or not so wonderful person there...or several. As a SEIT I attend many. They are frequently different from district to district. Keep in mind, although it can be intimidating, as the parent you have say in what happens.

As a teacher I've attended/teleconferenced in my fair share too. Be sure to ask a lot of q's, b/c they tend to go fast. They will give you a handout of their findings, but ask for layman's terms when they explain it to you. Ask what are some things you can do to further help your child at home. Good luck!

ETA: If you truly WANT services play everything up, b/c they tend to play everything down.

You should get all the test results and reports to read before the meeting. You should also have a chance to either meet or talk with your social worker about the results and recommendations before the meeting. Work with the social worker to come up with a plan - go in to the meeting knowing what you want. The social workers know the districts and can give you some insight about what to expect. Good Luck
