I have no problems teaching my DC that sometimes "No" is the answer, and if I say No, I'm not going to budge. IMO, it will help them for the rest of their lives by learning to deal with not getting everything they want.

I absolutely 100% agree with this.

That article just demonstrates yet another example of what is wrong in our society............parents don't want to be bothered parenting. It is a little word called "NO" and parents need to be able to use it FREQUENTLY so their kids learn that everything isn't about them and they can't always have everything they want. It's part of being a parent and it's an important life lesson for kids.

What about the candy at the checkout at the supermarket?? Or the bubble gum machines? Parents need to learn how to say no....

I suspect its not the parents that are buying, but the nannies are to avoid tantrums and looking like a terrible nanny. Or something of the like...

my town does not allow the ice crean man and I love it. even if you say no, it's still whining and asking every time they hear the music.

Oh, good grief.

I don't want my daughter to eat McDonalds. If she asks someday, I'll tell her "no." But I'm not going to protest in the McD's parking lot.

This is too funny! We had our first ice cream man "visit" yesterday and as soon as DS heard him (two blocks away) he looked at me and said "Mommy, do you have any money?" because he is so used to me saying I don't have the money for that...we did get it for him yesterday, but he knows that sometimes he gets and sometimes he doesn't. He's not even 3 and he knows the difference...why can't all parents just learn that they have to teach their children no.

I wouldn't mind no more ice cream man. I told DS it is the Music Man Truck. I wouldn't bother protesting though.
