Passport Question

My passport has my maiden name. Can I use this?
Will I have a problem going back into the country?
Do I need my marriage certificate?

if your tickets are in your maiden name, no problem. in your married name, you'll need something. how long ago were you married?

Re: Passport Question

So as long as you book the ticket in the name that is on your passport, you are okay?

Yes as far as I know, but I never changed my name, but DH and I have different last names and no one has ever questioned it, even at US customs and we go through as a family and he is not a US citizen.

Re: Passport Question

as long as your name is the same with all gov't agencies-- IRS, SSA, DMV, DoS (passport), you are fine, even if you are married and stated on your license you'd be changing your name.

Statue of limitations though for changing is 2 years after the marriage; in some states, you only have one year to change it. Here in VA, you have to get a court order to change it after the 1 year mark.

First question, have you changed your name with the SSA or DMV?

If so, you need to go to the State Department's passport website. If you were married and changed your name more than 1 year ago, you will have to pay for a new passport. The forms will be on there for a name change. It can take up to 6 weeks to receive the new one. You can apply for the new passport at some post offices.

Re: Passport Question

As long as the ticket was purchased in your maiden name you are fine.

If not you need to bring your marraige certificate with you to show the change in name from maiden name to married name.

Re: Passport Question

I never changed my passport, we just book international flights with my maiden name. It's not a problem, and I carry a copy of my marriage certificate just in case.

I don't think they will accept a marriage certificate.

DH and I as well. We have been questioned about the last name difference over seas but never here.
