Passport Question...calling Bxgell2
I am going to Israel in 2 weeks. Because my DH is an Israeli citizen, Talia technically is as well - they are now telling my that Talia needs an Israeli passport as well...
UGH - I don't think I am going to have time to get one...Bxgell2 do you have one for your daughter (I am assuming your DH is israeli born)
Or anyone else with dual citizenship have any advice?

Re: Passport Question...calling Bxgell2
I cant answer the question but since she was born in the US why does she need the extra passport right now? Can't you do it when you get to it? I mean she was born here and is a citizen, isn't that good enough?

Re: Passport Question...calling Bxgell2
My understanding of it is that she IS an Israeli citizen - so she needs one to get into the country - that a US passport isn't good.
(My dh has two passports - he uses the US one for all travels except Israel where he uses his Israeli passport)
I guess I figured that she is MY daughter too - and I am a US citizen - what if I was going there with her alone...a US one isn't good enough?? I'm confused.
In the meantime we sent away for her US passport and haven't even gotten that yet...oy!
eta: you should have seen them trying to get a passport pic. of her - THAT was interesting!

Re: Passport Question...calling Bxgell2
My DD is an american citizen with a US passport. We travelled to Ireland in July and that is the passport she used....seems strange that she would need an israeli one....

Re: Passport Question...calling Bxgell2
THey will know because we are traveling with DH - and he uses his Israeli passport.
Oh and then I am told that when she gets older I will need papers from America to get her out of the country (israel) if we go - so they don't make her serve in the army - lovely.

Re: Passport Question...calling Bxgell2
Oh god, are you SERIOUS?! I had NO IDEA! We were planning on taking Alex to Israel in January. Wait, so how the heck are you supposed to get an Israeli passport for her in the U.S.? They won't let her INTO Israel without it? That makes no sense considering because she was (a) born in the U.S. and (b) born to a U.S. citizen, she is a U.S. citizen - I would think that would be enough. Does your husband have citizenship here too?
Oy. Just wait until I tell hubby the good news

Re: Passport Question...calling Bxgell2
Wait, you know what? You probably do have time to get one, come to think of it. DH's passport expired and he had to get it renewed for our honeymoon and I distinctly remember he ran down to the Israeli consulate (in Philadelphia, mind you) and they gave him a new passport right then and there. Tomorrow, first thing in the morning, I would call the NY Israeli consulate and ask how you can go about getting her one. I'm fairly certain that the process for getting one is MUCH quicker than it is for a U.S. passport.

Re: Passport Question...calling Bxgell2
my DH got a call from the Israeli consulate (he had to update his passport) and they told him she needs one as well...plus my DH has to bring our marriage cert. etc... they have a LIST of things we need. It's crazy. My advice to you is dont wait until the last second like we did...call the consulate NOW (that is where she would get the passport)

Yeah - except that her Birth Cert. is tied up at the US passport office right now and I need it to get the other passport.
Grrrrrrrrr....
You know...we cancelled the trip when the war started - I should have known better though and gotten this all done then just in case.

OY GEVULT! And let me tell you, those papers they give you to get out of the country - they S*CK bigtime. DH was on wait status for his greencard when we went to Israel so they gave him "papers" that would allow him to travel to and from Israel. Yeah, well, let me tell you, they detained him for 2+ hours in the Israel airport AND JFK. Meanwhile, I was a wreck, sitting in the waiting room, thinking they had deported him
I'll have to get on top of this tomorrow

Isn't there a way to get a certified, legal copy of her birth certificate from the State?

I don't know about NY, but in a panic I just realized I have no idea where Alex's birth certificate is, so I looked up the PA Dept. of State website and you can request a certified legal copy online and it will be delivered within days.

Re: Passport Question...calling Bxgell2
I was born in Israel (as my dad was) and have dual citizenship. I have two passports and yes, must enter and exit Israel on my Israeli passport. I also did have to get exemption papers for the Army when I was in Israel at that age. However, my siblings, who were all born in the US do not have two passports nor were they ever asked for them or exemption papers. Since our dad is Israeli, they're technically Israeli too, but since they're American born, never needed any of the stuff I did. I would call or go to the Israeli embassy in Manhattan. They've always been very helpful to me.

Re: Passport Question...calling Bxgell2
My husband is an Irish Citizen w/ a green card. We have travelled back & forth to Ireland a bunch of times & never had to have an Irish passport.
Same goes when I travelled w/ my Mom & her Irish passport.
Is it just a thing for Israel? This is truly confusing me.
Ojk I went on to the Israeli Consulate, NYC website. here's the link you need. http://www.israelfm.org/consular/newborn_reg.htm

Re: Passport Question...calling Bxgell2
My dad was born in Croatia and he has a greencard here. I dont have dual citizenship neither do my sibilings. I would definitly call the Consulate because you might be driving yourself nuts for nothing. I know I can get a dual citizenship but that is something I have to do in Croatia not here.

Re: Passport Question...calling Bxgell2
I did call the consulate and it is right. All babies born to an Israeli parent outside Israel needs an Israeli passport. It is something specific to Israel.
Newborn Registration
Issuing a First National Passport / Travel Document for Someone Born Outside of Israel
Every Israeli citizen must possess an Israeli Passport / Travel Document (including minors).
A child born to an Israeli citizen (including children born outside of Israel as first generation out of Israel) is considered an Israeli citizen. The child must be registered as a citizen at the nearest mission within 30 days (according to the National Insurance Institute of Israel - Hamosad Lebituah Leumi: if you register your child after 30 days, you won't be able to applied retroactively for Child Allowances). The child must possess an Israeli passport when traveling to Israel, and must arrange his/her army status once sixteen and a half years old.
Please note that both parents need to be present at the Consulate, and at least one Israeli passport must be presented with the documents.
The following must be provided in addition to the requirements for a new Passport/Travel Document:
The original birth certificate with the complete name of the new born Both parents' passports (at least one of the passports has to be an Israeli passport). In order to receive a new document, the following is required:
Registration form for Israeli Citizen Residing Abroad (Hebrew / English). Application for a passport / Travel Document. 3 recent passport photographs, showing a front view of the applicant's face, neatly dressed, in color, and in a size of 2” by 2”. Please note that all fees must be paid in cash or with a money order. (Please do not send cash by mail). The fees are: - $50 for a new National Passport for an adult (over 17 years old) - $17 for a new National Passport for a child (under 17 years old) - $17 for a Travel Document in lieu of a National Passport for an adult or child
