Patio Furniture - which would you prefer? Seating or Fire Pit?

I have been wanting a sofa/chair set for outside for awhile now. It would go on a paved section of our backyard. Right now we have a table and chairs on the deck. There are stairs that lead down to the paved section where the new set would be.

I can't decide if I should do a room setting or chairs and a fire pit.

Thoughts?

Of those 2. Seating. I think it looks more inviting with the sofa.

But I would LOVE the same seating with a firepit type table with a ledge.

But if you ever have a canopy/gazebo, you can't have the firepit anyway.

I don't know where you live, but just in case, FYI fire pits are illegal within the 5 boroughs. I'm sure there are exceptions somewhere. I imagine they're ok out on LI since so many have them.

I personally loooooove fire pits so I voted for that...I think they extend the life of your patio furniture in terms of feeling comfortable using it late into the season.

are you keeping the current table and this is additional?

If so, I'd go with fire pit!

we have a fire pit that is built into the ground, but when we entertain in the summer our guests are always excited about gathering around the fire pit. we have several other seating areas as well.

some of the fire pit sets like you posted convert into flat tabletops so you could just have a plant or candle on it & it can be like a regular seating area as well.

I prefer the look of the love seat and two chairs. YOu can always get a stand alone fire pit. I personally wouldn't choose which furniture based on which came with the pit vs table, etc.

I'm not a firepit fan. I like outdoor fireplaces better and they are much safer. I always picture someone tripping and falling right on it. So for that I say seating only.

i would pick the seating set. you can always buy a firepit and then you'll have the best of both worlds!

I'd go with the seating....perhaps you can add a firepit or chiminea later?

I don't like the look of outdoor couches so I vote for the first type of set with individual seating.

we purchased a firepit and used it once - the neighbors complained it was too smoky which i agreed with.

Seating...

We got a fire pit for my mom a few years back and to be honest it was annoying.

The wind was blowing the smoke into our faces, we kept having to get up and move away from the direction it was blowing in.

Plus, we used it a few times - the nights were to humid and hot to want to turn it on.

Unless you live near the water - I think they are useless.

I like comfy seating better, people are comfortable and are more willing to talk and hang out. A nice drink and some snacks...perfect summer night

I'd do seating and buy a separate fire pit.

fire pit... but why not both, we did!

We had a fire pit that we use all the time, but not nice comfy chairs for it. We got an awesome set with chairs that rock and have cushions. We just switch the fire pit out and put the table in the middle when we want to use it! Best of both worlds. the table and fire pit are not that heavy to move!

depends on if you would use the firepit or not, but imo do both!!

I love the seating area with a fire pit.

You can always get end tables to go with the set.

Fire pits scare me around little kids. Last summer a 2 year old in our town fell on one and was burned so badly he was hospitalized for a long time.

I love a fire pit but not sitting that close to it. I hate the ashes flying up at me and then chocking on the smoke

I love the idea of a fire pit but it can be really uncomfortable sitting with the smoke.
I would go with #2!

We actually have both a seating area and a fire pit area. last summer DH was watching DIY at work and a week later I had a gravel patio where a yucky grassy area used to be. it never really got watered and the grass always looked gross. So we lined the space with a 4x4 PT frame and fiilled it with base stone (cheap) and then topped with pretty peachy colored small gravel. It is a long rectangular space so at one end we have a large gazebo and a deep seating set with a glass coffee table a love seat and 2 chairs. the other end we have anothe love seat and 2 chairs and the fire pit. But the FP comes with an insert that turns it into a table. If you get something like that, you don't have to choose unless you have a canopy over it.
