paying property taxes...

Do you pay your property taxes through your mortgage or do it on your own? If you pay it through your mortgage, how much did you have to escrow at closing? My mortgage company wants 4 months...

Do we ever get that money back?

I'd be inclined to pay our own taxes and earn interest on that money throughout the year - but I've heard horror stories about taxes not being accounted for correctly by the county / town when you do pay them.

Any thoughts on whether to pay through the mortgage company or pay on your own?

Does anyone live in nassau and pay them on their own?

I pay on my own now. It used to be in the mortgage and every year they wanted more money to hold in escrow. Now I put the money each week in a savings account and made the interest, not the mortgage company. I like it this way much better. I also took out my homeowner's insurance out of the mortgage and pay that once a year.
I am in Suffolk County.

We pay thru our mortgage and for right now as new homeowner's we want it this way until we get the hang of everything re: the house and it's yearl costs. We can remove it at some point, but for now we're happy to trust HSBC to pay our taxes and our homeowner's insurance policy.

We had to put 6 months into escrow b/c the previous owner's never paid their taxes, so they took of the late fees and such.

We pay them on our own. We have an ing account and every month we put money in. I figure the money is there and earning interest that I can use. As for getting the money back the mortgage company will do an adjustment every year and if you are over they will give the excess back to you--if you are under you will have to pay them. I just think it is a big PIA to have the mortgage company do it. JMO
