payroll question re: taxes
when DH and i had our taxes done we found out that the payroll company in my office is only taking out 11% for federal taxes - so if it had not been for DH's business we would have owed about $2500, and that is even with having a baby last year!
does anyone know if there is a way to change this? or does payroll just make that decision and i have to deal with it?
i claim "0" on my W4 and DH claims "1" so that isn't the issue.

Re: payroll question re: taxes
Are they taking out for other things like medical, 401k, state? What is listed on your paycheck?

Re: payroll question re: taxes
You can manually tell them how much to take out.
Ie. If your salary is $75,000 you can tell them to withhold 12% or $9,000.

no medical - we are on my plan and that is free. we both have deferred comp plans (we are both gov't employees, no 401k for us). we both get state taxes taken out, but not sure of the percentage.
we are buying a house this year hopefully, so that will help. i am pretty sure DH is going to change his exemption to 0 as well.

Re: payroll question re: taxes
depending on the co processing the payroll taxes you may be able to tell them to take an additional % out each pay period or an additional flat $$ amount each pay period from your payroll check.

Re: payroll question re: taxes
You should be able to do as suggested and request that a specific percentage be taken out, or a specific amount. Or just a specific additional amount.
I would definitely find out what your accountant suggests and have your payroll departments at work make that change for you.
