PCOS ladies - question about diet
I'm trying with this no-carb stuff- i really am!!!
I'm just curious what you ladies eat for breakfast...my usual breakfasts always consisted of toast or a bagel - always carbs. I now know that carbs are the absolute worst thing for me, but I'm at a loss for breakfast foods. Fat free yogurt was my next option, but I have to stay away from artificial sweeteners and dairy isn't the easiest on my stomach.
Fresh fruit? I guess that's pretty much what's left, no?
I was told no instant oatmeal (too many preservatives, artificial junk).
Please help!
Thank youuuu

Re: PCOS ladies - question about diet
Match your protein to your complex carbs and it's fine. Sometimes, I have an egg on a multigrain english muffin and it I had the time, I would throw a slice of ham (boar's head is very lean) in the pan and brown it up a bit for more protein. Banana and peanut butter on whole grain toast is another easy and quick breakfast.
Sometimes I would just make a quick turkey wrap. I usually eat in the car on the ride to work, b/c it's a 30 minute drive.

Re: PCOS ladies - question about diet
Thanks. I just got back from vacation and didn't go grocery shopping yet, so I really have NOTHING in the house. I'm thinking of just stopping @ the deli for an eggwhite, spinach, and turkey omelette. That should be OK, right? I'll just eat the eggs, no bread or wrap or anything.
I started the Metformin tonight and I'm afraid it's going to affect my stomach when I'm at work

Re: PCOS ladies - question about diet
I have an allergy to artifical sweeteners so I stay away from anything sugar free, I have been sticking with yougurt and fruit with a little granola thrown on the top (otherwise I'm starving come 10am). Yes, the other option is eggs but since I eat breakfast out it gets pretty expensive for me.

Re: PCOS ladies - question about diet
I am pregnant and have gestational diabetes so I am very restricted as to what carbs I can have.......especially at breakfast. The endocrinologist says to stay away from milk and fruit in the morning, too much sugar. I typically have a protein shake made with water, cup of decaf tea, string cheese, and my carbs are limited to 15 grams so I have a 1/4 c. (measured uncooked) regular oatmeal, not instant, made with a packet of Splenda and cinnamon. I know I'm more restricted with my carbs because of the GD but hope this helps a little. Good luck!!

Re: PCOS ladies - question about diet
I don't have PCOS - but i am hypoglycemic and have IBS
anyway - for breakfast i like to eat 3 eggs wrth of egg beaters with some cheese and toast
but a couple of good ideas are spincah egg cups - it is a south beach recipe - you make them over the weekend and heat them up in the morning also weight watchers has one that uses a little bit of hash browns ham and egg personal fritatas
another idea is make a frita and eat a piece in the morning
weight watcher food usually works pretty well because a lot of protein and good carbsfritata recipe
Vegetable Quiche Cups to Go (South beach) INGREDIENTS (Nutrition) 1 (10 ounce) package frozen chopped spinach 3/4 cup liquid egg substitute 3/4 cup shredded reduced-fat cheese 1/4 cup diced green bell pepper 1/4 cup diced onion 3 drops hot-pepper sauce (optional)
DIRECTIONS Microwave the spinach for 2 1/2 minutes on high. Drain the excess liquid. Line a 12-cup muffin pan with foil baking cups. Spray the cups with cooking spray. Combine the egg substitute, cheese, peppers, onions, and spinach in a bowl. Mix well. Divide evenly among the muffin cups. Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Re: PCOS ladies - question about diet
I LOVE MY EGG BEATERS!!!!!!!!!!
Add that to turkey bacon (which DH now loves) or turkey sausage. MMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, in the South Beach Diet there are these mini quiche cups, so freaking tasty! Let me know, via FM, if you want the recipe.

Re: PCOS ladies - question about diet
You should get a South Beach or Atkins recipe book. All of that food is low-carb or no-carb. The key as a PCOS'er is to cut out processed carbs. You can have a whole wheat bagel, 7 grain bread, or regular oatmeal...not instant. All the simple sugars that are added to processed foods are what is bad for those of us with PCOS and weight problems.

Re: PCOS ladies - question about diet
Thank you all I have several PCOS cookbooks, but there aren't too many breakfast options. I'm going to check the library for the south beach book.
Yesterday's Menu: breakfast: a salad lunch: steamed chicken with stringbeans snack: 5 baby carrots dinner: free range hormone free turkey cutlets with spinach, feta, and barilla plus. it was good!
Today: Breakfast: Dannon All Natural "no artificial anything" low carb yogurt Lunch: dinner leftovers Snack: apple Dinner: ? don't know yet!

Re: PCOS ladies - question about diet
I definitely recommend the South Beach book - its worth it just for the glycemic index alone.
Example - pineapple Someone who is on Weight Watchers can eat a cup of pineapple for 2 points and do this every day and lose weight. Someone with PCOS just can't do that - the sugar in pineapple will put us over the edge so to speak. Same with watermelon....pure sugar. Although everyone with PCOS is different and reacts differently to foods the above may not apply but its worth it just to look at.
I've found that "studying" the glycemic index was a huge help in me losing 20 pounds. I also worked out 4 days a week as well. Unfortunately the shizzy thing about PCOS is that we really have to work twice as hard to lose weight. It gets fustrating at times but in the end you're healthier and its worth it.
Other snack/breakfast options: Apple with peanut butter - one of my fav's!!!! I use it for both snack and for breakfast. Make sure to use a granny smith though if you are doing it for breakfast, less sugar and South Beach approved :)

thank you again - i have 5 PCOS low-carb diet books and they all focus on the GI. Luckily I'm not insulin-resistant, so it's a little easier for me.
Apples/peanut butter sounds great, but i have a slight peanut allergy. I'd have a swollen tongue and lips in minutes!

LOL - then I take it back
I have no idea if I'm insulin-resistant - according to the doc I saw last year my numbers weren't bad enough for them to do anything, just lose weight was what I was told.
Yeah thanks arsewipe.
