PCOS ladies on Metformin

Who prescribed this to you? Your general Endo or RE?

I was diagnosed with PCOS in my teen years and was immediately put on BCP to regulate my body. I was on it for many years until we started TTC. Now that my son is 11mo and I needed IF treatments to conceive him, I don't want to go on BCP again but I do want to regulate my body. From what I gather on the boards, Metformin has done this or many of you ladies. If I get pregnant naturally (highly unlikely), I'd be thrilled, so I wouldn't want to go on BCP again and jeopardize those chances.

TIA!!! I look forward to joining this board again... we will most likely start TTC for #2 in the summer.

The purpose of BCP was to regulate your cycles and prevent pregnancy but it doesn't cure any PCOS symptoms.
If you have insulin resistance, Metformin will help with PCOS. If I were you, I'd go back to an RE now so they can see if you are a good candidate to take Metformin. The longer you take it, the better chances it works, so if you're planning to start TTC in the summer, you'd have a good 7 months on it. In the meantime, it's up to you if you want to take BCP- I took it before I was ready to TTC and the RE said it's actually is good to take it before TTC. (i forgot why- maybe it helps your lining?)

Re: PCOS ladies on Metformin

Thanks for your reply!

I know... I'm SO mad at the Endo that I saw many years ago. Instead of helping me get the PCOS under control, she prescribed BCP and called it a day. I was so young and uneducated so I thought it was the right thing. Now that I'm getting older, I really want to be on proper meds.

So you think I should just go to my RE? I don't see a general Endo anymore, so I'd def be more comfy.

Thanks again! Chat Icon

My doctor put me on the pill for PCOS and I was on it for 10 years Chat Icon Needless to say.. now I have other issues, but that's unrelated. I would def look into the metformin! Chat Icon

I was on it for 10-11 years, too! Chat Icon

I didn't mind being on it bc my skin was awesome, I weighed less and I just felt better. I just think being on the pill would be counterproductive for me... especially since we are open to having another DC, but not necessary TTC.

Thanks! Chat Icon

Ok, cool! Looks like I'm going back to RSofNY sooner than expected! Chat Icon

I'm still BF but planning on weaning him in the next month or so. I wonder how long it will take for my hormones to go back to their wacked-out normal. Do you have any idea? I know they will want to do bloodwork and I'm afraid it won't be 100% accurate, KWIM?

Re: PCOS ladies on Metformin

I have a Metformin story. I have PCOS and I wasnt getting my period at all. Dr. B told me that Metformin may stimulate ovulation. Im still unsure if Im anovulatory at this time but after 6-7 months of taking metformin I am now getting regular periods. The cycles are very long (53-60 days) but theyve been consistent for 4 months now.

sometimes pregnancy can make PCOS better or worse. i have NO IDEA what my cycle will be like now. i def want to find out which is why im not running to get BC. but my DH doesn't want any accidents yet either. i think it would take a miracle since i conceived DD via IVF. as far as bloodwork if you are BF when you get the bloodwork your prolactin will be elevated, but other hormones may be accurate to where you are. im not really sure but ive been using OPKs to see if my LH is high again (i had really high LH as my primary PCOS symptom). the OPKs have never been + but I've had shades of lines for a while. who knows?! let me know what happens!

I really hope Metformin will help me out!

I *was* anovulatory with absent periods as well. I say *was* bc I am hoping pregnancy helped me out. I am not very hopeful though bc AF still hasn't arrived and I'm 11m PP. Chat Icon

i have a very similar story.. i was put on BCP right away to regulate AF (i never got it).. I was on it over 14 years until we decided to TTC.. went to first RE for about a year.. she never prescribed me with it.. but now at my new RE she said I should take it and it might help regulate me.. so I just started it last week! we'll see what happens.

Maybe they can prescribe Provera to bring it on. I was told its not healthy to go that long without one. Good luck!!!

its ok if you are still nursing since elevated prolactin can make you anovulatory. many people nurse for months/years without getting AF. the problem is that you will ovulate before you get AF, so you cant really know when your cycle is coming back when you are nursing. thats why so many accident babies happen when people are nursing.
