Pediatric Surgeon and High Risk OB recommendations
Hi Everyone, Im 22 weeks pregnant and my baby has an omphalocele. It is small and we are very lucky however the baby will need surgery as soon as it is born. Im looking for a pediatric surgeon that does surgery in Winthrop or North Shore or even South Nassau. My doctor is not high risk and thinks that she will be able to do my c-section in South Nassau only if we can get a pediatric surgeon at South Nassau to do the surgery right away. Im also wondering if I should see a high risk ob even though my ob has said she will monitor me really well. She said she will take care of it all but I feel that I should be doing something too. Thanks so much!!

Re: Pediatric Surgeon and High Risk OB recommendations
I used to work for the North Shore - LIJ Health System and delivered my DD at LIJ. Cohen Children's Hospital is a part of the health system. They have any and every type of children's specialty here. I would recommend looking here. If you are serious about seeing a high risk doctor, LIJ also has High Risk Obstetrics.

Re: Pediatric Surgeon and High Risk OB recommendations
Right now I am dealing with a few pregnancy issues too and I have encountered Winthrop Pediatric Associates in Mineola. You might want to check into them, as they have some individualized specialties.
Winthrop Pediatric Associates
I'm sorry you are dealing with this Can I ask how this was discovered in your baby? They are still trying to determine what, if anything, is wrong with my baby
As outside of my OB, I am seeing the maternal-fetal specialists at Winthrop Perinatal Associates (same building as the other group I posted above).

Good Luck!

I just delivered my twins at north shore and they rushed one of the girls to cohens for surgery. If I were you I would try to deliver at LIJ so you can be in the same building. The people at cohens are truly the best.

Re: Pediatric Surgeon and High Risk OB recommendations
I agree with what the other posters said about trying to deliver at LIJ, they do have one of the best NICU's. Winthrop also has a very good reputation I believe. I would switch to a high risk OB that is affiliated with LIJ. Dr Jonathan Herman did my c-section at LIJ and I really liked him. I was somewhat high-risk since I was on blood thinners during my pregnancy. I didn't see him as my OB but he was the covering dr for my dr's practice, and my dr's practice no longer delivers

This is why I decided to deliver at LIJ. Aside from having worked for the system, I always err on the side of caution. Just in case there was any problem during delivery, I knew that Cohen was right there. North Shore has phased out it's pediatric services because Cohen's is so close. ITA that delivering at LIJ would be ideal given your situation.

I am for your baby too. My 12 week blood work came back high for Downs, but we decided to wait and see how the 16 week blood work came back before doing anything. My 16 week blood work came back even higher for something so we chose to do an amnio. The amnio showed the baby was fine so we were very surprised that at the 20 week sono it showed a small omphalocele. My OB explained that is why all my blood work was coming back high. The baby is fine and we are lucky the hole is so small, I just want to make sure Im dealing with the best doctors now and that we know what we are dealing with. Thanks so much for all the info. Ill be making a lot of phone calls today. How many weeks are you?
