Cops: Cape Cod man attacks suspected Yanks fan
FALMOUTH, Mass.
A Cape Cod man pleaded not guilty Monday to charges he beat another man with a baseball bat because he thought the man was a New York Yankees fan.
Robert Correia, 20, entered the plea at his arraignment in Falmouth District Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and malicious damage to a motor vehicle. He was ordered held without bail until a hearing Wednesday.
According to police, Correia and others spotted a car with New York license plates leaving Falmouth's fireworks display on Saturday night. The group approached the car driven by William Nestor, of Northport and began yelling about the Yankees, police said.
Nestor and his family were traveling in two cars and stuck in heavy traffic after the fireworks show.
"They were yelling, 'Yankees! Yankees!"' Nestor told the New York Post. "When they saw the plates, they came at me."
A Falmouth police report said that after Nestor confronted the group of men, Correia went into his nearby apartment and got an aluminum baseball bat, then hit Nestor three times.
Nestor's father, Bill Nestor, told the paper that when his son stepped out of the car to face the group, one of the men hit him with the bat. Bill Nestor said he eventually was able to grab the bat from the man after his son was hit several times.
William Nestor said he was not a particularly big baseball fan and didn't know the Red Sox were playing the Yankees over the weekend. The 29-year-old was treated and released from Falmouth Hospital.
Correia's lawyer, Robert Nolan, said in court that Correia was in his apartment when an altercation erupted between a New York man and one of Correia's friends. He said Correia picked up a bat and ran outside to break up the fight. When the man charged Correia, he struck him with the bat, Nolan said.

This does not surprise me at all. When we went to Maine, DH had his a Yankee hat on and people were very rude to us there. They always mad obnoxious and hateful comments. And would curse us out. Right in front of DS
And one time a guy gave us this pass that he wasn't using anymore and it saved us a lot of money. As he was pulling away and saw our Yankee sticker on the car he said that if he knew we were Yankee fans he wouldn't have given it to us and then sped away like a maniac.

My cousin was punched in the gut by an old lady for wearing a hat at Fenway as he was pointed at and called "a hater".
It is immature and low class behavior.

Wow  But I know how that Yankee hatred runs... My sister is a NYer living just outside of Boston and her car is still registered in NY - thus NY Plates. She gets the taunts all the time!

I experience this hatred on a regular basis...and my DH happens to be an instigator--he wears his yankees hat, jersey, etc especially when they are playing boston..
and we live in Rhode Island
I still ahve NY plates also,but hve not had a problem out here in RI with the Boston fans..in mass tho, its a whole different story..and they live right up to the name of Mass-Holes.
We stopped in Boston one time b/c we were lost..in the winter time..and one guy would not give us any directions b/c DH had his yankees winter coat on

You are seriously going to fight someone because they like to watch sweaty men in tight pants who wear a different colored shirt than they sweaty men in tight pants that YOU like to watch?
Plus, players change teams all the time, so it's theoretically possible that almost the entire Sox team was a Yankee at one time....

i have never experienced anything like this (and DH and i went to fenway about 5 years ago and were actually treated very nicely by the red sox fans there!).
but this kid has to have been really really high or intoxicated... i can't think of any other explanation for an assault with a BAT.

Every year my friend and her sister drive to Maine right before christmas to go shopping. They stopped in a dunkin with her jersey on and were harrased.
People are such idiots.
