Re: people who moved to Connecticut from NYC

I'm originally from LI and moved to CT in 2001. I lived in central CT, Fairfield county and northern CT. I love it here. Fairfield County (closest to NYC) is pretty different from the rest of the state. It's very expensive, as are most towns within a short commuting distance to NYC. The taxes tend to be lower in most parts of Fairfield County, but you get less for your money. most of the schools are excellent although some of the cities tend to have problems, especially at the high school level.

Are you looking to be close to NYC? I can recommend towns, but I don't know where you're looking and what you're looking for. FM me if you want.

Re: people who moved to Connecticut from NYC

I grew up in NYC and lived in CT for a few years. I liked it a lot. I lived farther north, in Glastonbury (Hartford County), about 2 hours drive north of NYC. Not in Fairfield. But very nice.

Loved the rolling hills, part-rural area, (was changing from farmland to residential), beside a good highway system. Very good school district. People were nice, hard-working.

Lots of snow in the winter. But manageable. They keep the roads plowed.

Other towns in that area are very beautiful - Simsbury, Avon, Farmington.

I love all of those towns and would definitely recommend them, as well as West Hartford, if you don't want to be near NYC. They have excellent school systems and are much more reasonably priced than homes in Fairfield County.

The Black Rock section, which borders Fairfield, is supposed to be nice. However, Bridgeport, like most cities, has crime problems. The schools also aren't good.

Re: people who moved to Connecticut from NYC

I grew up in Ct and then moved to LI and lived there for 8 years and then moved back to CT this past summer after I got married. I grew up in Fairfield county and it was way to expensive for us to buy. My husband works in Shelton, Ct so we bought our house in the "Valley Region" of New Haven County.

We ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!! We bought a gorgeous 100 year old old Victorian Mansion 3,500+ square feet, 1 acre of land for way under what you sould spend on a 1 bedroom condo in LI. Our taxes are about $3,100/year!

People are extremely friendly, and more laid back. I've always had anxiety problems and my anxiety levels dropped dramatically since moving out here.

We don't have kids yet but when we do, we will probably be sending them to one of the Magnet schools in New Haven Magnet School link

I'm so happy we made the decision to move because now I can be a stay at home mom and we are able to afford so much more here!

Re: people who moved to Connecticut from NYC

I moved to CT from LI in 2000, and we love it here. It's less congested (if you don't count I95 and I84 normal traffic) there's more of a small town feel no matter what town you live in big or small. People are def more laid back, and talk a bit slower-it was hard for me in the beginning to slow down :)

I live in Central New Haven county, taxes are not too bad and it's really beautiful. I don't miss the flatness of LI at all. Fall was always my fav season, but so much more now in new england.

There are tons of great areas in CT, all counties though have their ups and downs.

To me Fairfield county is just an extension of NYC/LI area when it comes to house prices/taxes and how much land/house you get for your money.

Good luck!
