People who work in a hospital...
When I was in college I had a job wher my title was 'Patient Sitter'.
I basically showed up and made sure that people who were high-risk didn't get out of bed and try to escape. A lot of times they were people who tried to hurt themselves or wouldn't stop messing with their tubes/wires etc.
If you're a nurse/doctor/etc -- does where you work have a position like this? If so, what are they called where you work?

Re: People who work in a hospital...
I don't work in a hospital, but do work in health care through a home care agency. It sounds like you are basically describing the position of an aide to me.

Re: People who work in a hospital...
At my hospital, they were called SCAs (i dont remember what the letters stood for, though). Then there were PCAs, who drew blood, cleaned up the pt's, etc...

Re: People who work in a hospital...
My sister is a CNA and this from what you describe, sounds a bit like what she does. She also cleans up the patients, monitors them, etc. She sometimes does 1:1 or sometimes gets a few patients to look after.

At the hospital I worked at they were PCAs. They did more than that though.

Re: People who work in a hospital...
I've worked in hospitals. There is no position you describe, just to watch patients. The aides watch the patients on 1:1 but do all the other duties described above. No one just sits watching patients.

Re: People who work in a hospital...
I work in a hospital and they are called CNA's (Certified Nurses Aides).
If the patient needs 1:1 treatment they will sit with the patient. Also, they clean the patient/beds. They pretty much do the dirty work of nursing.
I believe you would need a 120 hour certified course to become a CNA in the hospital I work at.

Re: People who work in a hospital...
At my hospital the CNAs will work overtime to be the "companion" for the person needing 1:1 attention. HTH
