Perm sub vs Leave Replacement
Ok ladies some advice please!!
I went on an interview today for a business leave replacement.
It went well - I got called back to meet with the principal Monday.
Today I met with the teacher, the ***'t Principal and the business chair.
So...the position is basically ASAP through Jan 14th. The teacher is taking maternity.
They will start me as a sub for a few days or so I can get use to her classes before she leaves. Her last scheduled day is the 27th I believe...but they are thinking they want someone settled in case she goes sooner than later.
I have a perm sub position at my old school. Do I leave my old school and take this leave replacement so I get more exposure even though its only for a short period of time?
Most of you know the drama with my old district - but I know I have a job there all year.
What would you do?
Also, how do leaves usually get paid? Like a teacher or a sub?

Re: Perm sub vs Leave Replacement
My gut says to say with the perm sub. What happens to you at the Leave Replacement when the original teacher comes back? Now it's mid-January and will they hold onto you as a sub the rest of the year, or just let you go?
I honestly can't remember how my old district paid leave replacements.

That's what I don't know. I wasn't sure when I can "ask" that question. Do I ask them after I am offered the position or during the interview process?
I know my old district is a dead end - unless the other business teacher retires earlier than 4 years from now.
I am also on another district sub list but have only been called one other time.
I guess if this new district will keep me as a sub all year - that would decide on what to do!
I know am getting ahead of myself but I like to think things through and not make an irrational decision.

Re: Perm sub vs Leave Replacement
My 2 cents:
I don't think it would be so terrible to ask what happens at the end of the leave replacement. It's a logical question especially since they surely know you are coming from a secure job.
When I was a leave I was considered long term since they knew I was going to be there at least half the year. As a result, I got full salary, benefits, was covered by contract, etc. In contrast, another leave who was there for only 7-8 weeks was getting sub pay.
So, it seems to depend on the length of time of the leave and of course the district.
I am a teacher looking as well - and feeling desperate - but sub pay as a leave is pretty undesirable, as you're doing all the work of a teacher for peanuts. Then again, it's a foot in the door.
You can ask about the other thing before, but I would ask about the pay after the offer comes.
Good luck!

Thanks. I have heard both ways about leave pay. I didn't think of it that way though - about getting paid peanuts to do the work of a teacher.
It just stinks that the way the market is they know someone out there will accept a leave job for min. money.

Re: Perm sub vs Leave Replacement
Jenn,
Can you not sub in two districts? Can you just turn down work with the per position in order to do the long term position? Do you get work with the per sub position every day?
I am asking because I don't really know the LI districts very well.
Thanks!

Re: Perm sub vs Leave Replacement
I would take the leave. I think it looks better on your resume.
Each district is different, but usually you are paid 30-45 days (consecutive - you cannot take ONE day off) at sub pay, but on that 31st (or 46th) day you get retro pay for those last 30-45 days and then you are on step 1 salary (differential would depend on your education and their contract)
After the leave I would imagine if the school liked you, you would be called often to sub, if not every day.
You could also tell your dilemma to your current school and see if you would be able to sub per diem once the leave ended - and sub in both districts.

Once the leave is up I can definitely get work between my old district as a per-diem and the other district I am approved in. I would also assume that the new district if they liked me would use me as a sub.
I guess if I can show my face in multiple districts it helps my chances of getting a job.
Depending on Monday's conversation with the prinicpal I guess some of my questions can be confirmed.
I'm wondering if there are a few of us meeting with the principal or if I am the candidate that has to meet the principal as the final step. KWIM?
Thank you everyone! Hopefully I have good news Monday!

Re: Perm sub vs Leave Replacement
I would ask the leave replacement district about if there are any opportunities after the LR is over.
Also, many distirct pay LR as subs until the person who goes on maternity leave's sick days run out. For example, if the person has 6 weeks of sick days then you would get sub pay for six weeks and then be put on salary.
If there is an opportunity to sub at the LR district after January then I would take that position.
ETA: Sorry I didn't read your last post before I posted. GOod luck!

seems like a no-brainer. In this economy, I think LRs mean a lot. There aren't many jobs, so the top candidates are getting LR and I think SD look for that.

Re: Perm sub vs Leave Replacement
I think you should take the position. See if you can sub for the rest of the year at the HS. I subbed there for an entire year and was called 4-5 days a week - usually booked in advance. Be sure to befriend the woman who calles the subs (FM for her name) - she is a sweetheart and in charge of calling subs. If they like you, they will call you all the time.

I would go with the LR. From what you have wrote it seems the district where you are the perm sub is stringing you along.
