Pet store that sell animals other than dogs/cats
Are the stores that sell small animals (hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, etc.) just as bad as the ones who sell puppies?
I usually get stuff from petco (food, toys, treats), and they sell these small animals? Am I supporting another kind of mill by doing this?

Most likely they get their animals from warehouses, which are the same as millers. The only animals that do not follow this suit is "feeder" animals (yes, unfortunately some pets require animals as part of their diet.)

I don't shop at Petco because I have heard that don't treat their live animals well, and they're a chain which is generally not great for the animals they sell. You can google "Petco abuse of animals" and get many hits.
I shop at Brian's tropical Aquarium. The owner is almost always there, they have always ordered me anything I need and their prices are generally cheaper than Petco - but they do sell mice/rats/gerbils/hamsters. They keep their feeder mice/rats separate from the 'pet' ones, though, and I know that's a complaint at Petco (they don't separate them.
There are pet stores that carry NO live animals you could shop at, I don't think Champion Pets in Setauket does, nor have I seen any at Feasts for Beasts in Mt Sinai or the small shop in Miller place in with the Applebees and Eckerd where the old Waldbaums was.

What kind of food do you feed? Some premium brands can be bought directly from the manufacturer online.

Re: Pet store that sell animals other than dogs/cats
I had a very bad experience with Petco. My husband, when I met him, had two snakes - whom he adored. Now, I know snakes aren't the most "cuddly" of creatures but he really liked these snakes and they were great pets - not snippy at all - wonderful animals. He bought the first one, a certain type of Boa and then (a few months later) wanted to get a "friend" for the Boa - so, he went to Petco and asked what would be good as a tank-mate for the Boa. They suggested, probably the worst suggestion EVER, a Ball Python. Now, ANYONE who knows ANYTHING about snakes (and DH asked the "snake specialist" ) knows that Ball Pythons can contract a deadly disease from this type of Boa - and they are NEVER to be put together in the same tank. DH had no idea - which is why he asked the specialist - and the python got the disease from the Boa (the Boa is immune to it - just gives it to pythons) and we had to get the Python put down, after two years, and the snake suffered a lot before it died - he was sick and we took him the Vet right away - and they told us all about this disease - it was SO sad and my DH loved that snake - he was so angry and sad when we had to put him down - not to mention the money it cost. We filed a claim against Petco and won - they admitted they were wrong and apologized - we went into the store AFTER this whole thing had been settled and we were reimbursed our expenses - and they STILL had Boa's and Pythons together in their tanks!!!! I called the ASPCA and made a formal complaint - don't know what has happened since then b/c I no longer go in there and give them any business.
Now, Petsmart and other pet stores (mom and pop places) I don't know about - but I guess each can be looked at on a case by case basis.
It was just outrageous what they were doing there. I also had a friend who bought a chinchilla and they told her it was FEMALE when it was really MALE.

Oh god that is just heartbreaking... I had a beagle growing up as a kid who lived for 16 years before we had to put him down b/c of cancer. I couldn't IMAGINE doing that to an animal EVER.
It's disgusting. These people should have done to them, what they do to these poor defenseless animals.

OMG. And to top it off, Ball Pythons are not very good eaters, and have weird anxiety stuff too. People used to like them b/c they do not get very big by comparison (and also when Burmese Pythons became illegal in NY), and they were over-bred and now have weird anxiety and behavioural issues.
EEK. Sorry your DH had to get such bad information. BTW I know a great Reptile breeder if you want

So sorry for your loss. Rather than go to a reptile breeder, there are so many reptile rescues, Sean Casey is one of them..search him on the web. There are so many exotics that need a home, rescue is the way to go.

thank you so much! and thanks for the offer of a rec but we are not looking to get any other snakes for a while - and if we do it will be a special kind of dwarf breed b/c the prob with having snakes that get big is eventually you have to find sanctuaries for them b/c, in our opinion, it is not fair to the snake to be kept in a house when it is 10 feet long at full size.... but thank you!
it was SO upsetting for DH b/c he cared for them so much that being a "good owner" was his number one priority - so, to have something harmful happen to them b/c he went to an "expert" that gave him all the wrong information was SO upsetting and frustrating - i swear, he looked like he was going to cry when we had to put him down - and to see the snake suffer all the way to the vet and the whole night before we took him was heartbreaking - i mean, i know it is a snake and some people think but he really was an amazing animal. after that, the boa was like depressed to not have a tank friend anymore - DH has a friend who has a special exotic and reptile place - he brings in classes of kids to educate them on the animals - and he has a HUGE area where he told us he could put the boa - b/c, eventually with snakes like that you do have to give them to reptile zoos or farms b/c they get so big that it is not fair to the animal to keep them in a house - and once we have kids, honestly, i was not comfortable with a 10 foot snake that could eat a small child - so, once jethro got big our friend offered to take him - we go to visit him from time to time and he is so happy living in a HUGE habitat with two other red tail boas -
it was just sad for our python.

Danielle, I am sorry this happened to your DH.
Thanks
It was about a year and a half ago - but LeeRoy was Vin's very first pet so it was sad. When I first met him, I'll be honest, he was like "how do you feel about reptiles?" and I was like DEAR GOD HELP ME but even I grew attached to the snakes - unbelievable, I know but they were cute.
Thanks again.
