I think PETA is totally wrong!! I would be furious if I was a parent of a child there.
I am for certain circuses. I think some of them actually treat them very well. It depends on which one you go to.
Which ones treat their animals well? I've not done enough research on this. I would love to take DD to a circus someday but have a hard time rationalizing it based on what I know. If there is a circus out that that treats the animal well, I would love to know about it.
I am curious too, I have never heard of any that treat their animals well.
Also even they are not beaten, they are doing something so unnatural and isn't that in itself cruel?

I agree...the whole concept of animals performing tricks and such for the entertainment of humans makes me sick. I think you would be hard press to find a circus that treats their animals in a kind manner.
To me the circus is a big animal absuer (if thats the correct way to say it)

wow.....an elementary school, no less. PETA give AR activists a bad name
Although I agree that circuses are horrible in that way, approaching children as young as 5 is wrong IMO.

PETA would go so much farther with much better results if they did not do what they do in the 1st place.
They just can't deliver their message. They keep giving themselves a bad reputation that defeat the whole purpose of their cause (which I assume is not to traumatized children in an elementary school). They just don't get it.
If you harrass people you will only have the opposite reaction. People despise you for your actions on how you conduct yourself and not even listen to your message. I could not agree more!

I do NOT support the circus, but this is a dangerous test to use to determine cruelty. It's not natural for me to ride my horses, but it's FAR FAR FAR from cruel.
ETA -- FTR, PETA disagrees with me on this one. They DO believe riding horses is cruel.

I've also heard that they don't think ANY animals should be in captivity, including cats and dogs..... they should all be released into the wild....

People for the Ethical treatment for Animals
AT THE EXPENSE OF
Ethical treatment for people.
they are some of the most disrespectful and disgusting protesters around.
what a sneaky shady underhanded way to go about this...I guess they were afraid the teachers and parents are not as "ethical" as they are to properly teach children about circuses and animal abuses.
nope, don't like PETA very much at all.
Perfectly said -

Now on a side note, and I really don't know much about the subject do all circuses like Ringling abuse or mistreat their animals? Why would they abuse their main attraction ? It's not like trained elephants are a dime a dozen. The only way to train an animal to do things that nature never intended them to do is to starve them so they work for their food. And when they get angry for being hungry, they are beaten. If they don't do what they are trained to do, they are beaten. Fear the man and depend on him for food. That is how to make an animal submissive and work hard.

No - they don't believe animals should be sold in pet stores - which I agree. They believe pets should be neutered and domestic animals should be adopted. Exotic breeds they feel should not be bred for captivity, which I also agree. I adopted exotic breeds in the past.

Re: PETA stages circus protest at Hempstead school
As a teacher, I hope the school uses this as a learning opportunity. Maybe turn it into a lesson about animal care or how to treat an animal. With the older ones maybe study elephants in their natural habitat or some kind of debate. I agree there are right ways and wrong ways to get your point across and I don't think PETA was going about the right way, but I hope the classrooms will use the incident as some kind of teachable moment.

PETA is an extremist group and should not be allowed anywhere NEAR a school!
