pets in this heat wave
how have your furbabies been holding up the last few days? have you been doing anything special to make sure they are comfortable?
we've been leaving hershey outside the last few days when we arent home... our 1st floor has no AC, and we have a pretty sizable pond in our backyard... i figured it would be better for hershey to be outside all day where he can jump in the pond whenever he wants, rather than being locked inside with no AC
ETA: i leave the ac on upstairs and a fan running downstairs for our cat

Re: pets in this heat wave
We've just been leaving them home all day with the A/C running. LIPA is going to love us this month! I leave all their bowls filled with water and now they get Ice cubes as snacks. They LOVE ice cubes. Everytime we go near the fridge, they sit there and wait for us to hit the ice dispenser. We let them out to go to the bathroom but they absolutley hate the heat so they do their business and come right back in. We can't even take them on their walks they look so miserable. lol.

Re: pets in this heat wave
I am home all day and have the AC on downstairs in the den, but all of them hang out upstairs where it is hot. I really don't understand at all and am glad I never left AC on for them because they don't seem to care about it.

Re: pets in this heat wave
He's a smart dog, he knows water will keep him cooler than anything else outside! Good boy, Hershey.
Since ours generally avoid water, we have been limiting outside time to one walk per day (short one, before the pavement gets too hot) and exercise inside. We do more mental stimulation and training too. I've started doing a "search" game where I take little crumbles from the bottom of their treat bag, hide them through the house and they have to search for them. When they find all of it, they each get a stuffed Kong.

Re: pets in this heat wave
I leave the AC on for my dog and cats. But I only leave the AC on downstairs. My dog sleeps on my bed all day and the AC is right outside the bedroom. The cats go up and down and I figured if they get hot they will just go downstairs and there is no need to keep AC on upstairs.

I went out and bought an AC last week because my house was getting too hot for her.

Re: pets in this heat wave
I leave the AC running for our cat while we aren't home. We're on the top floor & it gets HOT in there.
I also leave lots of water. He sleeps on our bed & has a bowl full of food.
He's in paradise these last couple of days...no idea how hot it is out there

I leave the AC on for Captain bob and a bunch of ice cubes in his bowl. He hates the heat.

Re: pets in this heat wave
Ollie stays inside, she is by no means an outside dog. I guess it's because she grew up in the city. She's fine with the weather because we leave the central air on for her. However, I do notice her getting very weak very quickly on our walks. I try to do shorter walks with her just until it gets a little cooler out.

Re: pets in this heat wave
Petunia is horrible in the heat. She is inside with the CAC all day. When she does have to go out she comes right back in. She doesn't want to be outside unless she has to.

Re: pets in this heat wave
I saw on one of the news stations a story about a dog who was outside for 20 minutes and his temp was 107!!
He was having heatstroke and they had to rush him to the vet - he's ok after them treating him but still scary!
To answer the post - kitty is always inside, she gets the CAC on 75 when we're not home and she doesnt seem to mind.

Same with Roxy. And with her heart and seizure problem she is in AC all day.

Re: pets in this heat wave
we had the AC on for 3 days straight for Casey. Its bad for our electric bill but good for her. She over heats very easily. We also cut her walks short if we see her slowing down and panting a lot. So far she seems content to be inside laying on her bed all day. A dog's life is hard.

Re: pets in this heat wave
We leave in at home with the ac on, Achille's is shaved too which helps and he usually sleeps on the tiles which are a bit cooler. I tried leaving his ice cubes in his bowl but he got freaked out by them and wouldn't drink until they melted.

Odie gets hot and dehydrated so we leave water and the AC on. He barely makes it around the park before he's dragging and panting

Re: pets in this heat wave
I shut all blinds and close all windows and leave the house completely dark as possible during the day. I also give them fresh water every day. I have cats and they seem to love the heat. We don't have A/C and it isn't too bad indoors as long as I do this during the day. At night we leave fans by the window to bring cool air in.
