PGD Questions
My RE strongly recommended us doing PGD testing on our frozen embryos prior to doing a FET due to my advanced ( ) age and my prior history of losses. I'm somewhat on the fence about it for a variety of reasons, but we are going to go ahead with it.
What exactly do they look for when doing PGD? The paperwork we have to fill out doesn't specifically say. They just call it 24 Chromosome PGD testing. Are they just testing for Downs and Trisomy? Or are there more genentic issues they can find when doing this?
TIA!

Re: PGD Questions
Hey there...are you going for #2???? Wow, that is awesome!!!
My question would be: How many emby's do you have on ice? Can you afford to loose any? PGD has been known to screw up perfectly good emby's. And the fact that you don't have any known genetic issues, I'm surprised they are suggesting it. I mean this is the same batch as DD, right (sorry that sounded like a cookie..LOL, I must be hungry)?

Re: PGD Questions
I wasn't aware that they did 24 chromosome testing I thought PGD only allowed for 12 chromosomes to be tested I have to talk to Dr. B about that, it would be nice if they could check more chromosomes. Can you do PGD on frozen embryos?
For me I was doing PGD to check for translocations because I have a balance translocation and this could be the cause of my losses. It's hard because sometimes you might lose a lot of embryos--that's why I didn't do it last time cause i only had 5 embies and didn't want to chance losing them. good luck I hope it all works out for you

Re: PGD Questions
BA - Umm.... we are hoping too in the sometime near future
My RE is strongly recommending it for a couple of reasons.
1. My first loss and then the loss of DD's twin. He's certain that because of my age, there is a very strong possibility that at least half of the embies are abnormal (I have 6 frozen blasts)
and
2. Why put ourselves through getting pregnant if there is a chance I could miscarry. This would give us the best possible odds (even though there is no gaurantee a healthy perfect embie will implant).
He assured us the risk of losing all the embies is minimal. We are looking to pay out of pocket when we do the FET cycle since I only have one IVF attempt left on my insurance and we want to hold onto that in case I need to do a fresh.
loliepop - My RE said this PGD testing is new that they are doing.
He did say they can do it on frozen embies. They would thaw them, do the biopsy then refreeze them separetley. Right now I have 6, 4 are frozen in pairs and the other 2 individually.

i am going to do PGD in a few months! i have a specific genetic disease that they will test for
but, maybe we can go through this together! i have a PGD consultation on 9/25
what RE are you going to?

Re: PGD Questions
PGD can't test for all chromosomes. Maybe that has changed now, not sure. Do you mean a procedure called CGH?

No, there is new PGD testing - I've been doing some reading online about it. It's called 24 Chromosome PGD testing
Here is some information regarding it. Two of the authors of this, are the founders of RMA (one of which is my RE)

Re: PGD Questions
As many are aware, DH and I did PGD due to a loss, increased age and poor egg quality. Yes, you do lose a lot of embies but they are ones that would not have made it anyway. Is there a chance of messing up an embie that WAS normal? Yes, about 5%. That risk was one we were willing to take for a 95ish% chance.
The cycle after we decided to go the PGD route resulted in only 5 fertilized embies. My RE felt that 6 embies were really the cut off because of the risk of losing most or all of them after the PGD results. His suggestion was to do another fresh cycle and batch them. After that cycle we had 13 to send out for PGD and only 3 came back normal (Apparently 1 from the frozen 5 and 2 from the second cycle of 10).
This new procedure is probably what my RE had mentioned last year. He said that there was going to be a new technology coming out but with my age, yada yada yada...it was not worth it to "wait for it."
As PGD is expensive, perhaps you would be better off doing a fresh IVF (since it is covered) and batch it with the embies you already have frozen? At least that way you would only have to do PGD once should the FET not work or resulted in no viable embies to transfer.

That was a thought, but should I get pregnant again, this will be it for us, and I don't want to take the risk of having too many embies in storage knowing we are never going to use them. (I'm almost 39 and DH is 44)
We just gave the consent to go ahead with the PGD, and will keep our fingers crossed that we at least have 1 or 2 good embies to put back when we are ready to move ahead with the FET. Who's to even say that these 6 will even survive the thaw...

Re: PGD Questions
Hope you don't mind me asking a quick question......
Out of curioisty, the frozen embies you have were from the same retrieval as your DD's right ? Just wondering what makes them need to do PGD on the frozen embies and not on the fresh one (your DD)....Just wasn't sure what the maternal age part had to do with the PGD when it comes to frosties ( we have 3 frozen ourselves so this is interesting for me)
Sorry if this is a totally dumb question
Lots and lots of luck !!!!!!

Yes, you do lose a lot of embies but they are ones that would not have made it. _______________________________________ This is what the genetic counselors ( 3 of them) told me. They all feel that PGD was not as good as everyone expected it to be..
When they send out the cell from the embryo, it may have something wrong with it, BUT mother nature usually corrects this, but by doing PGD they embryos are concerted no good and they won't be used.
When in fact they are perfectly good.
