Phys Ed + ELA and Math

Ok so common core. Appr / LOL. I add math to an awful lot of my lessons but I dont add English (I think.) Im being observed next week. Adding math is not a problem. I went to the Suffolk Zone Conference today and went to their Common Core session and the woman who was presenting wrote her own books to be read during the first class during your unit. While this would be great, I have a problem reading in class. As you already know Phys Ed is mandated 120 minutes a week and most of us only see them 80. Also 1 in 3 children are obese or end up with diabetes. My goal is to have my kids moving as much as possible. How do you feel about reading short stories?

Just thinking... some alternatives to stories that might not take up as much class time...

How about posting directions & having the kids read them together?

Not sure of your age group - but maybe work in alphabetical order for group activities when taking turns - or let the kids with the most number of syllables in their first name go first...

Label balls with vocabulary words & have the kids read one when they catch it?

Maybe ask for quick summary report from each squad at the end? (written or oral)

Do you think i can tell the story in my own words and show them the pictures in the book as i go? I bought a special book about throwing/ cleaning up. Its perfect but a little too long. Id also like to ask at the end what do you think happened next. Then ill have an activity for what happens first, second and third in the book. Maybe ill read the book day 1 and do 1 activity. Then during observation do a review of the book and do activities 2 and 3. I can ask them questions about what we read etc.

Why not do a story through movement or a skill that the particular grade is working on. Present a problem using maybe an obstacle course and the kids have to find a solution. Or connect a non-fiction text like sharks to a movement they might bedoing.

Thats what i want to do. I bought a book called clean up your own backyard. Ill put up a badminton net as a fence. First the kids in the book throw the garbage over their neighbors fence. Next in the book they throw it in the trees. Then a storm blows in. I plan on teaching the overhand throw. First theyll throw over the net. Then at mylar hydrogen filled palm tree balloons. Then well do it the rightway into recycling cans. Which will be my made up ending. So we can hit on recycling, listening, talk about what happens next, overhand throwing and any time they hit a balloon or get the ball into a can they get 3 points. So math also. Too much? I wish i knew how to write up the lesson plan with the common core ela and math.

That sounds like fun! I don't think there's anything wrong with occasionally paraphrasing parts of a book - in my opinion, it shows you are being a responsive teacher & know how best to reach your kids.

Are you being evaluated according to the Danielson rubric?

Do you have to read a story to them? ELA is also vocabulary. In one of the schools I worked in the gym teacher always had a bone of the week. She would would use that as vocabulary and had a whole word wall of body parts. She would have the kids say the new bone and talk about etc. and then reviewed the old ones. It went pretty quickly if you are short for time.

My trainer read our group Green Eggs and Ham. Whenever he said certain repeated phrases, we had to do a different activity. You could alter with kids - use jump ropes, jumping jacks, high knees, butt kicks, push ups, squats, etc

Also, what about creating a scavenger hunt. They have to read clues, do an activity and then find the next clue to read?

Here was our workout:

Today was story time with the classic book called Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Suess. A big part of your workout spent on our green eggs and ham workout. The buzz words were not, would, could, and green eggs and ham. Every time these words appeared in the story you had butt kicks, squats, rows, or bicep curls. After all was said and done you wound up doing 830 reps of butt kicks, 280 squats, 130 rows and 100 bicep curls. Wow! That's crazy. Then your next segment was with the bands. We added another 50 rows and 50 curls as well as 50 reverse flys. We definitely hit the back and biceps today. You did 100 crunches and bridges. Way to go everyone! Your getting stronger and fitter. Keep going and i will see you in camp.

Great ideas! I did do a scavenger hunt of sorts once anx the kids looooved it. Well it was actually like a letter hunt. I made up a puzzle for the kids. The kind where a certain letter equals a number. The numbers were written on paper under cones in the gym. They took their paper to cones and every time they lifted on it would say somethinglsomethinglime 5= R. Then it said something like now do 10 pushups before you move on. They had to figure out the phrase.

My observation was awesome. Pretty flawless on my part but I did have a student give me a run for my money. It was almost comical, like he was sent to sabotage me LMBO
