pink bathroom
Our home has a 1970s pink bathroom similar to the one below. only the gray tile is black in our bathroom. What can i do to tone down the pink??? Gutting the bathroom is not in our budget.

Re: pink bathroom
Depends on how DIY you are. We have a dark brown Jacuzzi tub in one bathroom, along with the same dark brown sink, toilet, and the floor was very dark brown as well.
I didn't want to buy a whole new tub just for the color, so I replaced the toilet and sink first. That was pretty easy. Light rugs on the floor helped with the tile until I replaced it recently. Light towels also brightened the room. For the tub, I used a special tub paint to repaint the tub to an almond color. The entire bathroom looks completely different.
I think there are companies that will paint the tile and bathtub as well.

Re: pink bathroom
You can get the tub and the tiles reglazed for a fraction of what it would be to gut the whole thing. Or you can DIY as GoldenRod suggested.
If that is out of your budget as well, I would suggest a shower curtain with some other colors in it, and more neutral rugs.

Re: pink bathroom
I would replace the floor tiles--that alone should make a big difference. Also consider replacing the toilet and the sink.
You could also reglaze the tub so that's not pink also.
I can't stand this 50s-60s tiling! Ours is pink and gray, the only good thing I can say is that the gray cuts down on the pink.

By the way, I didn't mean to insult your bathroom. This style of tiling just isn't for me.

Re: pink bathroom
What is your budget?
Today I am having a tub reglazer come to give me an estimate to glaze white over our 70s blue tile.
We also had a peachy/pink 60s bath that we just gutted and DH and my dad redid. It was a lot of work, we had over 50 bags of garbage just from one small bathroom.
So I would say it all depends on your budget. Reglazing can be done but could cost over $1500

Re: pink bathroom
This was our bath while we gutted it. No pics of it, but we too had a peach toilet, peach vanity, peach wall tiles, etc. Image Attachment(s):

Re: pink bathroom
thanks for the suggestions. The previous owners did replace the sink and toilet..so they are not pink. however, the bathroom is still so pink. it looks like pepto-bismal exploded on the walls. sorry to anyone who likes pink tile but it is just not my thing.
I was contemplating painting the tile but was scared of the results. If you painted the tile, how did it come out??? i'm nervous it would chip and then we would be forced to gut it.
Tile reglazing is out of our budget. I don't want to spend a lot. I guess just tryint to tone it down would be best.

Re: pink bathroom
How about stickers you can put over some of the wall tiles?

Re: pink bathroom
I had the same pink bathroom until last week. I've lived in my house for 3 years so it definitely took awhile, it's the guest bathroom though. We decided to wait until we could gut and redo the bathroom.
Some ideas:
You could have the tiles and the tub reglazed. There is a place in NJ called Mr. Ugly and it's not that pricey. Maybe you could find a similiar place in NY.
FYI -- to my surprise a salesman in Home Depot who works on bathroom renovations told me that people are actually looking for the pink tiles since they are no longer made/available.

Re: pink bathroom
I have seen this on a sell this house. They did everything in white to oppose it. White rug, white shower curtain, curtains, towels etc. It did look MUCH better!

Re: pink bathroom
I was watching one of those remodeling shows last week on HGTV and saw them place white wainscotting over the bathroom wall tiles like yours, maybe you could see if that's an option.

I tried this when I had my pink/peach bathroom. The problem was keeping up with white floor rugs, shower curtain etc. It was a nightmare in itself.
I just had a tub reglazer come today to give me as estimate. As of today, I am in contract to have my WHOLE bathroom tile and tub (70s blue) reglazed Kohler white.
I can't wait!!!! I will post pics when I get it done (2nd week of Nov).

OMG, me too! Seriously, mine is all Pepto pink. Everything is a shade of pink - there is no other color! At least the gray in yours breaks it up.
Here's what we did, because complete demo is not an option for us either....
I took the shower doors down and put up a really pretty curtain with some purples in it. That hides the tub and gives another color to work with. We will eventually reglaze the tub.
We haven't done it yet, but we will be replacing the toilet and sink. That makes a huge difference, so I can't wait.
Here is what mine looks like - the curtains hides the pepto pink tub!

Re: pink bathroom
my mom had the tub, tiles, and sink reglazed, and it worked well... but only as a temporary fix...
the tub, and soon after, the sinks, began to chip around the drains and peel off. My estimate was about 2-3 years before it started....
so, you should really weigh the pros/cons of reglazing, and whether or not you're willing to pay a couple k for 2-3 years, before having to gut the place....

Re: pink bathroom
I actually got stuck with a pink bathroom in my first two apartments. I love pink, but not in the bathroom
Here are my on-the-cheap suggestions (since I was in grad school AND a renter when I had to spruce up these bathrooms):
1) Put wall-to-wall carpet in the bathroom in a neutral color, like beige. This is what I did in both apartments. I went to Nat'l Wholesale and got a cheap, off-white (almost beige) rug that was about 4x6 . My mom helped me to trace an outline of the bathroom. The easiest way to do it is to lay newspaper around the bathroom until you get an exact replica of the shape you need. Place this on the carpet and use an exacto knife to cut out the shape you created.
**Note: if you're worried about the wall-to-wall getting dirty, place a separate bathroom rug on top.
2) Once you have the carpet down, the only pink tiles you should have to deal with are the backsplash. To tone this down, I just brought in white and cream colored towels. With all the creams/whites/neutrals, people will hardly notice the pink tiles

Re: pink bathroom
I really like the carpeting idea. I hadn't thought of carpet in the bathroom... That's one way to cut down on the color!

Keep in mind i have a large bathroom, and tiles on like 8 different wall/surfaces. For me it is worth it.
We had replaced the toilet and vaniites and mirrors 4 years ago. And I just put down vinyl tiles that look like real tile. So it will look brand new. There is a 5 year transferrable warranty on the glaze.

If that started to happen so quickly, then the job wasn't done well. You mom should have called the company back who did it.
My parents had the tub reglazed - it has been good for at least 7 or 8 years now and is still in great shape.
