Pit Making me Itchy?
Let me start off by saying I'm not *technically* allergic to dogs. They ARE a trigger for my asthma, but I generally don't get itchy or break out into hives or anything. Except with Lucy, our pit bull. Sometimes I find that after petting her or cuddling with her or after she licks me, I get very itchy and I get small raised bumps on whatever exposed skin touched her. This does not deter me from petting her and usually is so minor that I don't notice. DH never gets itchy, but my bff does as well. Lately, it's been very bad. My friend was over last night and just sitting next to her on the couch made her break out. Granted, she does need a bath, so I'm hoping that will help, but does anyone know what this might be from? Is there anything special I should use to bathe her in? I just wonder why it's so bad lately- is it just that since she needs a bath she has a lot of dander?

Re: Pit Making me Itchy?
there are shampoos and other products out there that can help. DH used to be allergic to dogs. Before he moved in with me, I had two dogs. The weekend before he moved in, I bought all these products that I found online. He was always fine. My parents had 2 labs, and in the beginning, he would take a claritan or something after we were at their house for an hour or so. after awhile, he stopped having any reactions to them.

Hmmm I'll look into it the special shampoos. I thought there might be. It just boggles my mind since it's out of nowhere. I'd notice it maybe once a month before and now I notice it daily. Thanks!

I dont know how it works with dogs, but I know with cats, most people are actually allergic to something in their saliva and not the fur itself. The cat licks (grooms) itself, someone pets him and then they have a reaction.

I don't have any advice, but it's funny you mentioned this. I also have a pit and my BFF gets the same way when shes around. Shes not allergic to dogs either and this has never happened to anyone else that has visited. It may be a coincidence, but I wounder if it could be something. We always thought it was the short pointy hair, but wonder if it could be something else. Let me know if you figure it out. Good Luck

I thought the same thing about the short hair! It's kinda stabby! Maybe that's it! I scooped her into my lap last night and nuzzled her for a bit and then spent the next 20 minutes scratching at my neck! But I'll still go home and do it again tonight, like an idiot!

I think it can be the same way with dogs, but my other dog licks me and no problems. They've both been giving me kisses for at least 3 years so it's just so strange that it's out of the blue like this. So weird!

Thanks- I did google and the answers were a little varied. Someone did recommend an oatmeal bath once a week to reduce allergens. Maybe we'll try that- but she HATES baths!
