Re: Planting front beds
We just did this 2 weeks ago. We went to Heatherbrook Nursery in St. James with the measurements of the garden. they designed the whole thing for FREE. When i say designed i mean marked where we should put stuff and sugested 4-5 plants/bushes to put there. He said this way there will be color year around and in the spring/summer fill in with flowers of our choice. Plus this time of year most nurserys are having great sales!!!Hope this helps.

This is a great idea- I wish I knew of such a thing.
I will try to get a pic of ours- we totally ripped ours out because it was a mess. We replanted it with mostly shrubs and other perenials. We have a couple English boxwoods, a couple junipers (I think) a rhododendron, shasta daisies, and a few other things.
We bought things really small because it was cheaper- like, a big English boxwood was about $40. I got two tiny ones for $5 each. They'll get quite a bit bigger.

Re: Planting front beds
Tracy, we totally ripped ours out too. Its bare right now. We are having topsoil delivered today, so I want to go plant shopping this weekend.
We were thinking of junipers too, and some of those red palm plants, some sea grass, one of this minature red tree things (lol), but we are not sure if it will all "fit" together...

Re: Planting front beds
Last year we wipped out ugly junipers and towards the end of Sept I got montauk daisises on sale and planted them - they took and are nice and thik. I also added a birdbath and a butterfly bush.
On the other side, which gets a lot of run off from the leaking gutters that have to be replaced, I planted a small hydrangea that I bought at Trader Joes as an Easter Centerpiece. And it took too. I also have lavendar and some day lillies
I tossed some Martha Stewart Kmart wildfloers all over the bed and they took too
Towards the back corner of one of the beds I have thyme, oregano, roseary and sage
I finished off this mish mash with some begonias and marigolds
I like how the one with the daisies looks, but the other one is too 'bare' I need to wait for the gutter to be replaced to really dfo that bed, the soil keeps running into the garden
Basically I am totally faking it, and its working

Re: Planting front beds
I bought a bunch of bulbs a few years ago at Odd Job and thought these will never come up. But they DID! Everyt year. I have beautiful gladiolas, and azalea, some hostas that were left from the previous homeowner. I then bought some perennials this year. I am moire in favor of doing perennials a lot less work and you pay once to have flowers forever. Tulips are nice bulbs too. My Mom had some that are still coming up 30 yrs later. I LOVE hydrangeas but haven't bought any yet. If you want annuals I have usaed impatiens and clematis in my full sum yard with good reults-usually watering every other day. I have a cource for free wood chips so we laid that down this year.
