Re: Plaster walls?

OH BOY!!....we have plaster ceilings and we really did not want to redo them right now (long story). Anyway we mixed white ceiling paint with spakle and with a big brush kinda swooshed it on the ceiling in a swirl type direction to give it a thick look. It actually covered the imperfections very nicely. And, it looks different. Chat Icon

For now we are happy with it.

Re: Plaster walls?

oh, welcome to my world. our whole entire house is plaster. There's 100 years worth of bad patch jobs too.

The previous owner decided that sponge painting is the only way to cover the bumpiness of it. Short of tearing down the walls, faux painting treatments are pretty much the only way to cover them.

good luck!

PS - be careful hanging things up in them, do NOT use nails!

Re: Plaster walls?

Did anyone remoce wallpaper from plaster walls? Is is more difficult than removing from sheetrock? Anything to watch out for?

Dash Patch worked great! It's mix between a plaster/cement like substance. I mixed it up in small batched because it dries quickly!

You can get it at any paint supply store.

Plaster walls can be a nightmare, treat them with TLC. Benjamin Moore has paint out to use I think this is it. We used it on our walls and it looks greatbjmoore

if you have old plaster walls, you can end up causing some of your plaster to crack with nails.

You just put a piece of tape where the nail will go and no cracking.

we JUST did this.
it is easier (so I've been told).
we hired someone.
just couldn't see myself dealing with wallpaper removal.

My old co-op had plaster walls so I know your pain. There are a few things you can do.

First and most important you have remember to look at the walls with an easy eye - they are never going to be perfect.

Second Stick with flat or matte paint, the best paint finish is a textured look which will hide all the bumps and lumps.

Third If the wall is really bad sheetrock over it. I had to this on a few walls and it was really the best solution IMO.

When I go to hang something with a nail I put a piece of packing tape or masking tape where the nail will go and it prevents cracking.

If I were doing crown molding, I'd use liquid nails.
