Play Dates

No, I'm not a parent yet but DH and I absolutely CAN NOT STAND this expression. Does it bother anyone else?

When we have kids, we hope that they will "play" with their friends or "go over so-and-so's house" or "hang out" but play DATE? Ughhhh!

Re: Play Dates

Hahahhaha DH said to me even before our son was born "he will NOT go on play dates" LoL he will go outside to play or over a friends house. He hates the expression too!

Re: Play Dates

My friend in the city refers to it as "play groups". Every Thursday the group gets together at someone's home and the mom's drink wine.

me too, I have too many OTHER things that irk me and that one is far from it.

I do reinvent the wheel in so many other ways though Chat Icon

When you have kids, you can make up a new name for it Chat Icon

ETA: ACtually I think saying "the kids are gonna hang out" sounds a little odd. Maybe it makes em sound too old. I dont want my boys "Hanging out" for many many years Chat Icon

Re: Play Dates

I agree with not liking the term, "playdate". My future children will be going over "so and so's house" and NOT having play dates!!!

Re: Play Dates

I'm so with you - I don't know why but this expression really irks me. We didn't have "play dates" when we were kids, we just went over each other's houses and, ummm, PLAYED!!!

Re: Play Dates

I used to think that the expression "play date" was a little weird, but I now realize that children don't really socialize in the same way that we did at children. In general, they are a lot more scheduled and their parents are busier, so it isn't as spontaneous as just walking down the street to someone's house. It really is a scheduled "date"!

I agree. Nowadays, you definitely need to fit playing in.

Doesn't bother me either.

Re: Play Dates

My mom always recalls moving into our house way back when (25+ years ago!) and the neighbor across the street constantly wanting to set up "play dates" ... my mom had never heard the term and still remembers how silly it sounded to her at the time!

On another note - as a first grade teacher, my kids say "play date" all the time, so you may have no choice if your kid uses it or not! Chat Icon
