playing Wii in gym class...acceptable or not IYO?

DH was FURIOUS when DS came home yesterday and was saying they played Wii games during gym. At first I though nothing of it but he had gym again today and said he played again, some ninja fruit chopping game with bombs???Chat Icon

I understand we're going the way of technology but C'mon where does it end?

What say you?

DS's school did the Wii for gym just about every day last year in K...

Not sure how I feel about it....Its "active" so I'm ok with that aspect, but to me its not interractive enough with the the other students and I am curious to know what role the PE teachers play in it...

Electronics will be replacing teachers before long Chat Icon

For the most part, not acceptable to me.

Last year our gym floor was damaged and sections had to be ripped out and replaced during the school year. They had gym outside unless it was raining, and then they did stuff in their classroom. I would have been ok with the wii in a situation like that.

No good. Unless there were extenuating circumstances, I would not be happy and would be calling the principal.

I would request more information. Maybe they are working on a unit.

Re: playing Wii in gym class...acceptable or not IYO?

This is a HUGE program that is either paid for by the PTA or a grant.

The kids are exhausted after it and are beyond excited. You really should go see it in action and talk to the PE teachers before you judge it. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised by how athletic and interactive it is.

The PE teachers are NOT sitting around--they are just as involved as the kids!

It's so easy to judge something without the full information--I highly suggest you learn more about it. Your kids are very fortunate to have it, I wish the district where my kids will go did!

They had a family fitness night I just came back from with several Wii and Kinects stations, so I can say i think it's a waste and unneccesary IMO the kids had just as much fun in the cafeteria doing old fashion bootcamp drills to music, IMAGINE THAT?!

You are fully entitled to your opinion! I have seen it first hand and think it's amazing. Even the principal, vice principal and teachers get in on the action...it's a school wide event for about a week. It's a changing world out there...Chat Icon

P.E. should be about peer interaction in addition to exercise. I'm not thrilled with the idea of using video games in P.E.

DD's school actually just finished this week long unit. I also thought it was amazing and the gym teachers were totally involved as were the staff in the school. I thought it was great. I hope they bring it back for another unit. "If" it became a permanent thing I could see it being a problem for you. Was that the intention? Or is it being done for a small period of time?

Re: playing Wii in gym class...acceptable or not IYO?

If it's done as a week long unit a couple of times a year then that is great. I do not want that replacing my child learning to play with other kids, displaying good sportsmanship and understanding the importance of teamwork.

Not OK and honestly the reason isn't screen time or that it's a video game but more..*** is a teacher getting paid for then???

My K running around w. a pop gun pretending to kill small animals would get the kids moving too - doesnt mean it's an appropriate means of excercise (although there is always someone who would think so)

I agree w. previous posters who questioned sportmanship/teamwork and why are we getting certified gym teachers then?

Btwn the IPADs and WII school why not just give my 5 year old an online course....

My son has gym class every single day. If they did the wii occasionally during the winter it wouldn't be a big deal, IMHO. If he had gym 2-3 times a week I would want them to make the most out of their time.

I think the program is great too. It is only for a week I think and it is very physical. I think the whole point was to get the kids excited about playing the fitness games so they can do them at home instead of just sitting on the couch playing regular video games. The kids are outside running around every day it is not raining so taking a week out to show them fitness games is not a big deal to me.

I think a pp asked....Three Village will be doing this program too.

Re: playing Wii in gym class...acceptable or not IYO?

I am a Phys Ed teacher and would NEVER. My children start out with approx 5 minute jog, A Jumping Jack Challenge, push ups, crunches and stretching. We then move to an actual lesson. We usually play at least 2 games after warming up and stretching.

I would maybe write a letter and ask. Next Friday I am showing a movie in the gym. I do this for 2 days out of the whole year because Im setting up a GIGANTIC obstacle course and it takes SO much time. Maybe theyre doing something like that?

I can also tell you they are pushing us to incorporate math into our lessons which I have found easy (One way is we count by 2s, 5s, 10s or whatever when we stretch. I taped #s on the floor and if they shoot a ball from there and get the ball in the basket they get those points. They keep adding them up as they go etc). Also they want us to include writing and reading, which is not as easy. They have also mentioned using technology. (I used a whiteboard once and taught them how to score bowling LOL Its not easy when you have to take 50 children to the computer lab.)

I dont know, I would never jump to conclusions, but I hope thats not what theyre all doing just because.

If it was just a one week program and the teachers are very involved and staying physically active then maybe its not so bad. Kind of like a preview to better games you can have at home? Im still not sold. Id have to see it. I have played many wii fit games and I dont think the kids would get a fraction of the activity they get with me as their teacher. I think its very important these days.

ITA! we had this in our school this past month. We got a letter and in told us what it was all about. It is a great program. everyone in the school gets involved and the kids love it.

It is not like this all the time. Jacob has gym 2x a week for 40 minutes. That is a little over an hour once a year.... do not see anything wrong with that!!!

Re: playing Wii in gym class...acceptable or not IYO?

I would not be happy with this at all...I am doing my best to keep my son away from video games and this being something thats okay in the schools would make me very upset. I appreciate that the teachers are involved, but what about parents like me who don't want their kids playing video games. And I know in my sons school, I am not the only parent keeping the kids away from video games, so this would never fly.
