and explain if you can
If you had to choose a job
a. NYC BOE in an okay school that lacks needed supplies, has rude/disrespectful students, but an amazing administration
b. Private High School five minutes from your home on Long Island

I'd be tempted to go to the private school but would prob stay in the NYC school until something better came a long because of salary and retirement system - I know quite a few older educators who did a lot of years in private schools before going public and none of those years counted for retirement!

I agree with wask. I know a teacher who was in private school for 15 years and when she moved to public school, only 3 of those years counted, so someone with 25 years experience has it with the boe as only 18 years.

public school mainly because of the salary and the retirement system. it seems so far off now, but those years you don't get credit for is going to make a big difference if and when you move to another public school. any time in a private school does NOT count towards the pension!

Personally I would probably make the switch. Convenience is really important to me and I won't tolerate a long commute... working 5 minutes away from home would be tough to pass up. And if your working conditions leave much to be desired which is what it sounds like, and you're thinking about leaving, why continue to be unhappy? It's still early enough in your career to be able to move on to greener pastures.
However I'm saying this now but I'm not the one in your situation... Change is scary, and there's also the comfort factor of being used to a certain place and fear of the unknown that would make it hard to leave.
So I don't really know what's best, but I wish you good luck with your decision!!!!!

i would switch. my reason being i would want to be closer to home since I have kids. I know you don't have any YET, but that could be something to factor in. You could always start your own retirement account.

ITA.
Even if the pay was the same or a bit better than NYC, it's the pension and union representation that make all of the difference.
I taught in a parochial school for three years and was REQUIRED to do all sorts of extra-curricular activities. I never left there before 4:30/5:00 every day, then it was back home to do grading, etc.
I was actually told that being speech and debate coach (EVERY DAY after school from Sept-May) and three Saturdays a month 8-5 at various schools was 100% part of the job. I got a measly stipend for it.
I worked my tail off those three years and not one day counts towards retirement so instead of retiring at 55, it will be a minimum of 58 for me. That may not seem like much but I have a few collegaues in my building who are the same age as me. They'll be leaving when we are 55 and I'll be there for three more years to qualify for the same pension.
ETA: It is a MAJOR difference in quality of life later on. Having the pension is the possibility of at least a few hundred thousand dollars at that point in your life. I know private school teachers who are working poor due to the salary... several from my old school either have DH's who do really well ($$$) or are single adult women who still live with their aging parents because they can't afford to live on their own on the salary.

same here. I have a 9 minute commute to work this year, vs. a 45 min. commute when I lived on LI. It makes a HUGE difference, especially because if I forget something at home, I can run back very easily.

I would seriously reconsider teaching if I were forced to choose b/w the city schools and a private school. After having spent time in the city school system, I would never go back. Never had to work in a private school, but from what I've heard teachers work hard and are minimally compensated.

Thanks for all of the advice ladies!
It looks like the job on Long Island may work out.
If not, I will stay with the NYC DOE for the rest of this year, and figure out my other options later.
I would NEVER give up on teaching though. I am sorry that you feel that NYC DOE and Private schools are that "bad". I am happy that you were able to get a job that makes you happy because I wouldn't want you to have to give up such a great career. We need all the good teachers we can get :)

Simply replied - didn't suggest that she should do this. In my reply I used the word "I", referrring to what I would do in that situation.
