Please answer POLL: WOULD YOU HIRE A HOME STAGING Co.

if you were having trouble selling your house? I'm asking for my mom who is thinking of adding this to her decorating service. TIA!!!

Also would you expect the initial consultation to be free?

I would expect the consult to be free.

And I would hire one if I felt that might help sell if needed.

I probably wouldn't, but I think of home staging as when you have an empty house that you want to appear lived in. I'm sure they can help you get rid of clutter and make a normal house look nicer but I don't know that it would occur to me without my RE suggesting it.

I would. I don't think its just for an empty home I think its also for a "lived-in" home that you may want to declutter and freshen up. But, I'd expect the consult to be free.

Re: Please answer POLL: WOULD YOU HIRE A HOME STAGING Co.

If the consult were free, wouldn't you then not need the stager?

I mean, if she tells you what she thinks should be done, then why would you need her?

I would take it the same way I get estimates for anything in my home. I wouldn't expect her to give me the nitty gritty on everything to be done, but to give me a price for what she would do.

It's the same if an interior designer comes into your home and tells you how much their services cost. I wouldn't expect them to tell me the exact color they will use to paint on the walls but an overview would be good.

Plus --- I'd want a fresh perspective in changing up the house. I wouldn't want to do it myself because I'd want someone critical making the necessary changes.

My mother's real estate agent included a home staging free with his service.

Re: Please answer POLL: WOULD YOU HIRE A HOME STAGING Co.

I probably would if it stayed on the market too long. I would never pay for a consult. That's probably because I also expect that the consult will not tell me what to do but more of a one on one with a "quick" proposal of what would be done, get references, photos of previous stages done, more like an interview, etc....

I wouldn't hire a professional stager, but I'd read books or web sites about the topic and stage my home myself.

If my home wasn't selling, I would probably hire. I would not pay a consulting fee. Also people in general are very attached to their home and you would be surprised and what people believe is acceptable in showing their home.

Re: Please answer POLL: WOULD YOU HIRE A HOME STAGING Co.

I would get a free consult if it was available. Maybe they keep track of their "successes" and could tell your mother how many of their staged homes sold quickly. It's hard to say if the staging will help. So the cost would directly affect my decision to do it or not.

Re: Please answer POLL: WOULD YOU HIRE A HOME STAGING Co.

It depends on the price point of the house. If it is on the higher side then I would - people looking in that price range want a perfect house and want to see the full potential.

My mom's friend does home staging in addition to her "Clutter Cutter" business.

I probably wouldn't. I feel watching a marathon of Design To Sell would do the trick.

Some staging companies provide the furnishings, so unless I had the right kind of stuff to make the house look great, I'd consider using one.

Re: Please answer POLL: WOULD YOU HIRE A HOME STAGING Co.

I honestly don't know.... While watching TV shows with stagers, it's soooo obvious those people need them... but I hate to say it, if the house isn't empty, it's usually becuase their own stuff is dated or lacking universal appeal (code for really tacky!). Admitting to yourself that you're in that category is a hard pill to swallow Chat Icon I suspect the people who need it most would admit it the least.... I know I'd be too proud to admit my personal taste is not appealing to the masses....
BUT, if your mom hooks up with some realtors.....

Staging is something I have recommend too a few friends who had trouble selling there houses. After the staging they both sold there homes just weeks after the staging.

Re: Please answer POLL: WOULD YOU HIRE A HOME STAGING Co.

i'm going to say i wouldn't... because we haven't. our home has been on the market now for 4 months. i know, in part, it is due to the really crappy market right now - not so much what our place does, or doesn't look like. when we first put our home on the market, our agent offered a stager, but it was at an additional cost, and we turned it down. basically, we have a small place and there's not too much that can be done/moved except to declutter to the best of our ability. i'm not going to pay someone to come in and tell me to do things that just aren't feasible. yes, we want to sell, but we do live here as well. as an earlier poster said, if the house was on the larger, more expensive side - then i probably would consider it, because with a larger space to work with, there's more that you can do. and as she said, with certain price brackets, a buyer is going to expect a lot more "perfection" in its look.
