Please help me feed my 4.5 month old with a spoon.
I'll put the spoon to his lips & smear a little of the cereal on them so that he knows that food is coming. But when I put the spoon IN his mouth, he freaks out. Has no idea to close his lips on the spoon to "get" the food.
What else can I do to help him get it? So far we've tried a spoon for 5 or 6 days, 1x a day. Maybe I need to practice with him more than once?

He starts to cry. Doesn't even swallow the cereal once it drips into his mouth. It tastes exactly like his formula, I've tried it.
Maybe I shouldn't rush him? He LOVES watching DH & myself eat. He will just stare at our plates & his eyes will follow where the food is going when we eat.

I do not think he is ready yet, I would try again in a few weeks
4.5 months is still pretty young, some babies do not "get it" until 6 months or so
I would not force it

ITA.. that's what I was getting at.
It's not about the taste... but babies do need to be developmentally ready.
Can he sit up unassisted? That's one of the signs. Also loss of the tongue-thrust reflex... and ability to let you know when he is full (turning away, pushing food away)

He can sit tripod style for up to a minute & he never pushes the bottle away. He could eat all day.

I don't think he's ready yet. When I first tried with Rylan he wasn't ready and I had to wait a while longer.
I've been trying with Xavier now who is the same age and I don't think he's ready either. He'll try to eat it but gags to the point where he has thrown up. I tried making it mostly formula to somewhat thick. I also tried rice and oatmeal just incase it was the taste but it's a no go.

DD just got the hang of it at 4.5 months. Tried at 4 months and she did the same thing...crying, pursed lips etc..so we waited. Now she cant eat it fast enough.!!!
