Please help me with sleep issues!!!

I'm dying over here. Chat Icon Luca is just not a good sleeper. He'll be 12 weeks tomorrow and he's still waking a minimum of 2 times a night. The past week he's been waking up 3-5 times. I'll put him to bed around 10- he'll get up between 1-2, then again around 4 and then again around 6. It's driving me berserk!! I'm starting to want to pull my hair out.
Any suggestions on how to get him to sleep better. What's that book I've heard people mention? Please help me!!! I feel like at 3 months he should be sleeping MUCH better than he is. Oh, and for the record, he maybe naps 1-2 times a day for a total of 2 hours.

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child is highly recommended by all the Dr.s in my Ped office and has been very true to life for us so far.

Do you think he'd go down earlier? It's weird but sometimes that makes them sleep better (they dont get overtired that way). I am definitely no expert, good luck to you!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Definitely read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Dr. Weissbluth.

ETA: Definitely try an earlier bedtime. You can move it up gradually - in 20 minute increments if you are not comfortable moving it up several hours at once.

I would aim for a bedtime around 7pm - 8:30pm.

It sounds like his naps are decent, although they could go a little longer. Also can you work in a third nap?

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
Good luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Please help me with sleep issues!!!

Well part of the problem is that I work, so I don't have full control over his naps 4 days a week. He usually won't take a morning nap at all. I try to feed him right before bringing hom to mom's or MILs around 2ish and he'll usually fall asleep in the car and then nap at their house for an hour to an hour and a half. Then he'll usually take an evening nap for a half hour to an hour. As far as puttin him to bed earlier, there are 2 nights a week that I don't get hom until 8-8:30. I know it's probably selfish but I wouldn't want him put to bed before I get home to see him for atleast a couple of minutes. Maybe we can try to move his bedtime to 9pm and see how that goes.

What time does he typically wake up in the morning?

That's odd that he's not taking a morning nap - unless maybe he sleeps in late in the mornings?

Re: Please help me with sleep issues!!!

Do you think he is hungry when he wakes or is he just waking and having trouble getting back to sleep. Molly is also about 12 weeks and I put her to bed about 8pm and I will wake her at about 11, give her a bottle so she isn't hungry and then she will usually go until about 4am, have another bottle and then sleep until about 7am.

Maybe he is not eating enough during the day? I wish I had more advice!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't know...to me that sounds quite normal! I think thats what Noah was doing when he was 12 weeks. He never napped in the day and he did wake 1/2 times in the night!!!

I would read Healthy Sleep Habits...that worked really well for us! The 5 S's were great to know!

I agree.
DS also had the same problem and he wasn't going to bed until 9:30-10:30. I could only get maximum of 4 hours at a time if I was lucky.
Finally I tried putting him to sleep between 7pm and 8pm and now he sleeps 6-8 hour stretches.

DD had the same thing and when she was 3 months, we bought one of those swaddlers, and it was like magic! She would sleep through the entire night!

same here - with swaddling i get anywhere from 4 - 7 hours...mostly 5 hours since 5 weeks. Put her down 11 -1130 up at 5 am. I'm not sure how to get more out of her though... I have noticed the few nights that i put her down earlier she wakes up at the same time - 5amChat Icon

Megan started sleeping through the night at 3 months. We noticed that when she started to take 6 ounces at a time, it held her much better. How much is he eating?

Re: Please help me with sleep issues!!!

I know every baby is different, but I will tell you that for Nikolas it was a gradual change that led him to start sleeping through the night..(this only happened within the past few weeks for us!)

For us it was a combination of trying to get him to nap better during the day, increasing his bottles by one ounce, and moving his bedtime up that helped. When he naps during the day, he sleeps 100x better at night.. on days he doesn't nap, he's overtired and sooooo cranky that he'll fight going to sleep at night (and will keep waking up!)

He is a big eater during the day (he does 7oz bottles every 3 hours) so I think that holds him over through the night. For napping, I look for his 'tired signs' during the daytime ... when I see him yawning and rubbbing his eyes, I know he needs a nap (doesn't always work, but lately I get an hour nap in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon on a good day). In the afternoon if he's fighting the nap, I try to take him for a walk or drive since the car and stroller immediately knock him out.

We used to put him to sleep for the night about 10pm, but he was miserably cranky from about 7pm until bedtime.. just whiny and impossible. I realize now that it was his way of telling us he was overtired, so we gradually moved his bedtime routine up. Now he's in his crib by 8:30pm the latest, sleeps through the night and generally wakes up anywhere between 6-7am...

I hope Luca starts giving you more rest soon!

I'm really sorry to say this, but you may not get to see him on the nights you work late. As others have mentioned, staying up that late could be causing some of the problems. There were a few months that my daughter went to sleep for the night at 7 pm... any later was a disaster. Lots of other babies in my playgroup were around the same time, one as early as 6. Night wakings are to be expected still, but not more than two on a regular basis...

Re: Please help me with sleep issues!!!

He *must* be taking more naps during the day in order to get his nighttime sleep regulated.

He should never be up for more than 2 hours at a time at his age.

If I remember correctly - Talia used to go to sleep 1.5 hours after each wake time.

At that age I found the book The happiest baby on the block by Harvey Karp, MD to be a life saver
Now my DD is 6 1/2 months and another mother on this chat told me about Health Sleep Habits, Happy Child and it is was awesome!
Good luck with this!

Yes, these are the other 2. The 5 S's actually come from "The Happiest Baby on the Block". The idea that babies need to sleep after 2 hours of awake time is from the Healthy Sleep Habits...book. Both were GREAT!! And I definately saw an improvement once I made sure she was getting that morning nap (considered the most important one by the Healthy book) and also after making sure to put her down after 2 hours (also from the Healthy book).

If I could just "fix" her problems now I'd be a happy Mama.

Re: Please help me with sleep issues!!!

I think you need to follow his cues as to when he is ready to go to sleep., even if that means not seeing him. I hated putting him to bed early and I am a SAHM and DH never saw him at night but it was important for DS.
DS use to take naps around 7-7:30 and then I would wake him at 9:30 to feed him and put him in his crib. I decided to get the book Healthy sleep habits and realized after reading parts of it that I was missing his cues. So I started to put him to bed at 7 and he slept so much better. That was when he was 8 weeks old. It soon went to 6pm and if I was late in putting him to bed it was all over and sometimes it would take me close to 2 hours to get him sleep. He also needs some sort of routine and I think that will help alot. If you can him to nap durning the day even if that means he sleeps on you he will sleep so much better at night.
Good Luck!

Re: Please help me with sleep issues!!!

Is it possible that he is being overstimulated in the mornings and that is why he is not napping. I have noticed with DS that if I continue to play with him when he starts his tired fussiness thing, then he doesn't nap at all and just fusses the whole day.

Also, maybe if you put him to bed earlier, he will sleep more. Is he eating enough at his last feeding? Did you try giving him one more oz?
