Please help me with the NYC retirement system..
I have been in the NYS TRS for the past 3 years. I recently started a .8 position at a NYC charter school, so I wasn't eligible for a pension or retirement. In September I will be full time & will be eligible, so I was inquiring about the retirement system yesterday.
I'm still a little confused. I HAVE to join the NYC TRS, correct? Some teachers were telling me they were in both NYS and NYC, and others that I can only be in one.
Also, will my tier in NYS & what money I have in there be carried over to NYC?
Thanks so much!

Are you staying in the charter? My understanding with charter is that there is only a 403(b) (for most of them) which the public schools have, but it's voluntary.
You have to participate in the pension system in the public schools.
I just had a pension consult and was told that if I went to any other state employer, school system or not, the pension carried over. I am not sure how service works, though.
