Please help...tipping camp counselors....
What is the proper thing to do when tipping (this is my first camp experience). Frankie goes 5 days/7 hours/7 weeks. Some people say $5 per week? He has 1 head counselor (an adult) and 2 asst (teenagers). He absolutely loves one of the asst (she was amazing). I would like to giver her more is that ok? Also, what do I give lifeguards, music, etc.? Thanks so much!

Re: Please help...tipping camp counselors....
DS went to camp for 4 weeks, 5 days a week from 9:15-12:30. He had 5 counselors. I gave $10 per counselor. I asked the other moms the day before camp ended and that was the general consensus on tipping. One mom gave the head counselor $20 and the other counselors $10. I would say only half of the kids parents gave tips at the end of camp based on the parents who had envelopes to hand out. Since it was also DS birthday I had brought in 75 munchkins for them that morning.

When I worked at a camp years ago, full time was $1 a day.

Re: Please help...tipping camp counselors....
I guess my kids parents were generous tippers, but when I was a counselor I got $100 from each camper for 8 weeks of full time camp. The way it worked was there was a head counselor and then each regular counselor got assigned a few kids and only got tips from those kids. And this was over 10 years ago!

When I tipped last summer - my kids went 7 weeks, from 9 - 4 everyday - I gave the group leader 60.00 for the summer.

Re: Please help...tipping camp counselors....
Again, I never heard of tipping camp counselors. I'm thinking if the people who are using my camp are doing so to save money (it is much cheaper than regular camp), they can't afford to be tipping on top of the fee. I know I really can't.

Re: Please help...tipping camp counselors....
I was a camp counselor 7-8 years ago. As head counselor you'd hope for minimum $5/week. I guess that's the "going rate".
For the non-head counselor, I would say 1/2 the amount of the head counselor...then add a little for their favorite teenager. For the teenagers, what about an i-tunes gift card? Music teachers etc-dunkin donuts/starbucks gift card?
It's very expensive, but camp counselors deal with a lot every day. It's a structured day, but no where near as structured as the school day. Because that structure is diminished behavior for all kids are soooo different. Counselors put up with a lot and deserve a little extra. Their "salary" isn't good usually.

Re: Please help...tipping camp counselors....
Thanks everyone for responding. I think the $1/day, $5/week is fair.

Understood but why does every job think they should be tipped? Everywhere I go there are tip jars. Maybe I should put a tip jar on my desk at work and then I could afford to tip the counselors at camp.
