Please post photos of your DIY tiling projects
Was it difficult to do or is it a feasible project? How did you learn how to tile? I want to re-tile a bathroom when we move into our house. Any tips are appreciated!!

This is our entryway. there were vinyl tiles there before.
DH did it. its pretty easy, just tedious. and the key is to make sure the tiles are level or they will crack.

DH refaced our fireplace and hearth. It was fairly easy, just tedious. Once everything was (painstakingly) leveled, it went fairly quick.

I retiled my bathroom, and replaced some water damaged subflooring. I learned as I went. Wasn't that bad. Just keep in mind that your bathroom will be out of commission for a few days (or a few weeks if you can only work on it on the weekends...) Image Attachment(s):

we tiled our first place by ourselves - it's really pretty easy once you get the basics down.
subfloor
putting tile down
setting
with grout
getting "fancy":
we did the shower stal ourselves - I wanted to throw the tiles at DH during it though - the big tiles are hard to install vertically, but we did it.

I tiled the kitchen and Half bath. Loads of fun, actually not as bad as you think it is gonna be.
The key is finding your center and measure 3 times to find your starting measurement.
I purchased the cheap laser line at Lowes and it worked great. Keep your first row straight and in line with the layout and all goes smooth.
Dont just buy the cheap spacers use the ones which sit on the tile, much better......

I just wanted to let you all know how impressed I am with your tiling jobs. You've given me hope . . . I'm gonna give it a try.

Re: Please post photos of your DIY tiling projects
Bathroom, we gutted and did all the work ourselves (with my dad).
Kitchen backsplash we did. Mostly DH and I did it. In this pic the tile wasn't grouted yet, so it looks even better now. I haven't taken new pics yet, but you get the idea.

Sounds silly, but my parents got a dvd of how to do it, they tiled everything in their bathroom. total cost ~$3,000.00. Quotes from profs = >$10,000.
They said it was easy once you got started. GIVE IT A GO!!

I just wanted to also say thanks. This is something I've always wanted to do, but afraid to.
One question though, if you don't mind a little hijacking...
What kind of saw do you need to cut tile? We have no power tools so that might be pricey for us.

I used a dry tile saw blade for my circular saw. I know that everyone says to use the wet blades/wet saw, but the dry blades are really cheap, and I figured there was plenty of room for the blade to cool between tiles, since I was doing it myself, and I would cut one tile, then fit it, then measure and draw out where to cut on the next tile.
If you are doing a lot of straight cuts all at once, you can either rent or buy a wet saw (there's running water going over the blade to keep it cool, and minimize the dust) from HomeDepot, Lowes, rental places, etc. The cheapest wet saw to buy at HD was around $80, I think. The dry blade was $10-$15.

We used a wet saw. They aren't really that expensive, esp if you are going to do multiple jobs. Also, you can rent one from Home Depot if you don't want to buy it.
The only tricky cuts are the cuts around light switches, outlets, etc. We played around with this, of course, wasted some tile here and there but in the end, it came out great. A professional really could not have done better.

Re: Please post photos of your DIY tiling projects
if it was a simple straight cut we just used a scorer ($10-20), if it was a cut that needed a littl emore attention (two cuts) - I used a chipping tool, for anything more complicated and for the travertine I brought them to HD for $.50 a cut. They are supposed to charge for each line they do, but they never charged me the whole price - I usually would go in with 10 or so tiles and would pay $2-5

I purchased the wet saw at Lowes for like 85 bucks, if you have more than one room to do, it pays for itself...
