Please recommend a lactation consultant in Suffolk
I breast fed my first 2 children until over a year, they got the hang of it so quickly. Now with ds 3, he just cries an cries before latching on, if he even latches on at all. It's not every time, mostly at night, before bed. He's 1 month old. He is gaining weight. He has gained over 2 lbs since his birth weight. I just gave in and had dh give him formula bc I had no milk pumped. I'm a mess, crying like a baby over it. He is in there still crying and drinking a little. Can someone explain, why at night this is an issue with him???
Any LC recs??

Re: Please recommend a lactation consultant in Suffolk
I highly recommend finding one through LLL. Go online or call them at 877-4-LA-LECHE
As for why he's crying at night only...my best guess would be because your supply is naturally lower at night, and so the milk is not coming out as quickly as it might in the morning. So he has to work harder for the same amount. Not sure obviously but that would be my best guess! My LO did the same, and I would just switch her from side to side after every 15 minutes or so to give the other one time to reload per say, haha.
Good luck and hang in there! If he is gaining and producing enough diapers I would also stop giving him formula, he will get used to the fast flow and probably start rejecting the boob more. Supplementing is really a nasty cycle to your supply. Keep putting him to the boob as much as possible!

I agree with this. Also, some babies just have a witching hour and it might have nothing to do with your breastmilk. Especially if he's still crying and hardly taking the bottle. I would also not give formula and just try to calm him down and get him to latch well. Maybe a warm bath, or time in the baby sling/carrier. Anything to calm him so he can nurse.
Try not to stress! Especially if he's gaining well! You're doing a good job, mama!

Thanks guys. I hate that he took formula, it was only a little one you get from the hospital. He hardly drank any which makes me feel like maybe i is just his witching hour. We don't keep formula in the house someone gave me a 4 pack of these little things.

Deb Bouchard at Peconic Pediatrics, they are a Breastfeeding Medicine based Pediatrics. I didn't use her LC services beyond our first visit, but she has always answered every question I've emailed her.

I used their LCs as did a friend of mine and they are all awesome. I also agree with the first two responses. Considering he wasn't that into the formula, I would lean toward it just being his fussy time. DD was rarely happy between the hours or 6 and 10 pm unless she was nursing. Looking back, I think I should have just tried putting her to bed by 7 but who know how that would have been. Maybe try walking around and bouncing a little to get him to latch on or the carrier as someone suggested.
