Re: Please Recommend Who You Used to Grieve Taxes
I'm in Nassau and interested in doing this as well.
I know the property records aren't always correct but the ones I looked at have me paying the highest on our whole block!
TIA for recs!
Anyone know how often it helps? Can it backfire?

I'm not sure if Mark Lewis is just Suffolk or not. You can look them up online.
You can grieve you taxes once a year if you want. If you win lets say $1,000 off your taxes. Your taxes will always be a $1,000 less. Of course your taxes go up every year. I guess it could backfire but I think in this economy it wouldn't. With Mark Lewis, if they think they will not win, they will tell you that they won't win. HTH! GL! Make sure you find out for your town when the cut off is to grieve your taxes. Your paper work has to be in by a certain date.

Do they charge 1/2 of what they save you? Is it a one time fee?

Re: Please Recommend Who You Used to Grieve Taxes
1/2 on what you save for one time then its done. Unless you grieve again. We just started the process last month, it will take a year to a year and a half to go into affect if you win and if they take you on most likely you will since they will not take on cases that they feel are risky to loose.

Re: Please Recommend Who You Used to Grieve Taxes
I sent FM with the name of an attorney who specializes in these matters in Nassau County.
If you need a Suffolk attorney, let me know.

Re: Please Recommend Who You Used to Grieve Taxes
Do it yourself and save the money. I did. Just do your homework, which means get copies of what your neighbors pay in taxes to prove your house is over appraised compared to them. You can get it at you town hall's tax department.
What will be looked at is the size - square footage - of your house and the size of your lot. If your neighbors all have the same lot size and same square footage, it willl be harder to make your case.
The judge I met with didn't care about the condition of my house, just its size, the lot size and in my case that I didn't have water frontage, just a view, while my neighbors had water front.
When I did it for another house, the lot size mattered, but we argued that the condition of the house - only fair - and its lack of bathrooms - only one - made it worth less that the town appraised it for. We won and our taxes were reduced.
Good luck.

Re: Please Recommend Who You Used to Grieve Taxes
I am in Nassau. I've checked other houses like mine on mynassauproperty.com and the taxes are usually higher with the same lot and equal condition so I dont think I could do it myself.
Does anyone know if you can grieve village taxes? I am in Mass Park.
Thanks
