Both DH and I have Trek bikes. I like them a lot. Lots of price range too.

Re: Please recommend your bike
I’ve ridden a Cannondale for years, they’re great bikes that I highly recommend.
I would also recommend anything by Gary Fisher.

We both have Mongoose Mtn bikes and love them for trail riding. They come in a variety of styles and price ranges depending on how serious (or not, in my case) you plan to be about riding

I wouldn't go all out on buying bikes until you are sure you like it and it just isn't a passing phase. I just dusted off my bike after it sat in a shed for three years.
Target has really nice bikes at great prices.

I have to agree. I got the cheapest bike I could find in Target a few years ago and it serves the purpose. I just bought a better seat because your azz will go numb on the cheapy seats! But to just casually ride around the neighborhood or on bike trails- it's not worth spending a lot.
And I'm glad I didn't because I swear to you I have probably used my bike a total of 8 times in like 4 years!

Re: Please recommend your bike
I was going to go the Target or Sports Authority route, but I couldn't get any help in Target & Sports Authority didn't have very many smaller framed bikes, and wasn't that much of a bargain, so I went to a bike store.
I did spend somewhere between $300 & $400 though, so I that kind of motivates me to go once a week. DH bought one too, but we bought them a few months apart, so it wasn't as rough on our CC bill.
You can also get decent used bikes from yard sales & Craig's list.

Try Walmart too
we got our bikes there a few years ago and like another poster.. don't ride them as much as we'd like but when we do... they're fine for local riding

Re: Please recommend your bike
Thanks everyone! I definitely don't want to spend anymore than $200 each especially since it will collect dust most of the year. If we really enjoy it then we can invest in better bikes at some point. We went to Target, Sports Authority, Walmart and Toys R Us last night with no luck. I might just order one from Walmart.com and have it shipped to the store since the selection is better online.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Please recommend your bike
I think you should go to a local bike store and just have them fit your frame so you get the right size.
Some local bike stores have less expensvie bikes.
you can also check out www.climbonline.org - its a long island mountain bike organization that is very friendly - they have almost daily rides so you can go in groups. Plus there is a listing of local bike stores.
