Please recommend your deskktop computer
We need a new one and don't have a clue where to begin, or what I need to get.

Re: Please recommend your deskktop computer
What do you plan on doing with the computer? That's the first thing I always ask anyone when they ask for my advice.
Mainly surfing the web Photo editing Video editing High-end video games
Do you want to write to DVDs? Do you want a webcam? How many monitors would you like attached to the computer? Do you plan on adding more stuff to it later, or basically just leave it as-is until you buy a new one in a few years?
Would you think about a laptop? They have just as much power as a desktop, and the premium for the portability is very small. Years ago, it used to be very $$ to get the same capability in a laptop as a desktop, but that gap is very small now. I've convinced several people to go that route.

Re: Please recommend your deskktop computer
We pretty much use it for internet only (although I do work from home so I need to for work purposes online.)
The only photo editing I do is in Picasa (and that's pretty high-tech for me )
The only thing we need really are Word, Excel.
I could get a laptop - and maybe would -but I feel I am a creature of habit and feel like I have this big desk, I should get another desktop.

Re: Please recommend your deskktop computer
you can buy any computer in the 300/500 range and it should take into 3-4 years.
Just makes sure the processor is NOT a celeron..
if Pentium, get a dual core. Same goes for amd.
make sure the pc has at least 3 gigs of ram.
other then that, everything else is pretty standard. PC's don't come with office so look for the Student and Home edition for about 75 bucks.

Everything Tom said, but I just got it in a laptop for about $629 (I got a refurbished Dell from Delloutlet.com). I actually have 4 GB RAM, Intel Dual Core 2 processor T6500 @ 2.10 GHz, with a 320 GB hardrive.
I too was always a desktop person. However, once I went laptop, I will never go back to desktop. The portability alone is fantastic! I keep it on a desk in the kitchen, where it's hooked to my printer/scanner/fax, external hard drive, etc., but I can pick it up and sit on the couch in front of the TV and surf the web, or take it out in the back yard in the summer while the kids play, etc. I have even taken it on vacation with us

See, I have my parents laptop that is an extra computer for them (which I basically keep here all the time) so I don't really need a laptop - and with the boys (specifically Jack) I think a desktop is the way to go.
