We use Pedigree. The dogs like it and it's the cheapest one in Costco.

Re: please recommend your dog food

I use Prairie, the venison and millet formula and a homemade raw diet combination. This is what the co-breeder of my dog suggested. The Prairie is a 5 star rated food and the homemade raw is human grade (except for the raw factor) and loaded with nutrients derived directly from the food.

Re: please recommend your dog food

Please do your own research before you decide. Many foods people recommend are really not good quality but they don't know what makes a food good, so they say it's good based on the marketing of it, someone else's opinion, or because the dog likes it. Those just aren't reliable.

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/

Although you should do some reading on why a food got a particular rating, it's a handy guide and gets you started.

Price is also an issue, because the more real meat that is in a food, the less cheap grains and fillers, the more expensive it is. I know people who feed a six-star food but mix in 25-50% of a lower priced five or four star food in order to keep it manageable.

This also has information to read about the travesty that is the pet food industry today: http://www.truthaboutpetfood.com/new-to-truthaboutpetfoodcom.html

Good luck with your search. For the record, we feed Evo Herring and Salmon. It's very high in protein and is not recommended for dogs over the age of 7. We'll switch to a different variety of Evo then, we really like the brand.

Re: please recommend your dog food

Sorry, I forgot to answer your second part on why.

We have a dog with dry skin/possible allergy issues. When you deal with that, you want to feed something that doesn't have the typical allergens in it (grains, duck, etc.). We were feeding Natural Balance but it never sat well with me because it is distributed by Diamond foods, a major player in the pet food poisoning recalls years ago. Many pets died eating their food.

We researched fish-based food because Omegas are good for a dog's coat and skin, and settled on Evo. It's human-grade food, the company has a great reputation, was not involved in any of the numerous melamine or salmonella recalls in recent years, and is high in protein. Our dogs have more energy, don't get upset stomachs, and their coats look great.

We're huge fans of Evo as well.

We feed our cavalier Wellness brand simply because that is what his breeder started him on--and swears by.
He seems to do best on the small breed formula (smaller pieces).

Re: please recommend your dog food

Ive tried a few. I like Science Diet in general. My dogs have been on weight management, adult, sensitive skin, senior, puppy and active adult from science diet. Ive also tried Nutro Ultra Holistic and they are currently on Natural Choice weight management.

Re: please recommend your dog food

I actually use two. My dog grows bored of his food...Solid Gold wolfking and Blue Buffalo Fish and sweet potato. My dog is sensitive to lamb, wheat and corn so I must feed him food without these products. I have tried several different foods due to my dogs allergies and digestive problems...I would recommend Wellness, Blue Buffalo and Solid Gold products. These companies really do care about their customers- I have had to call with different questions and they have all been helpful. I would not recommend science diet dog foods they have a lot of corn and wheat products in them. I think it is important to do some research and choose a food that is best for your pet.

Re: please recommend your dog food

I go back and forth between Wellness and Innova, so they don't get bored. Both are highly rated healthy dog foods, recommended to me by the breeder I got Logan from and a dog trainer.

Canidae.

Same, but for a very specific reason. We have a Doberman Pinscher puppy, which is an extremely fast-growing breed prone to bowing / knuckling over when growing. He has to be on a LOW protein feed (among other things) and NOT a puppy food. He is on the Canidae All Life Stages and will switch to something else higher in protein (like Taste of the Wild or Orijen) once he is fully grown, which isn't until around 18 months to 2 years old for male doberman pinschers.

We use Science Diet Light, it has added fiber and such. The vet recommended it b/c Odie had collitis, so this "firmed" him up

Use to eat EVO then he got bladder stones, so the vet changed it to Royal Canin.
