Please say a prayer for my Sara - UPDATE #2 - Amputation
I took Sara, my 10 year old greyhound to the vet on Saturday. Her upper back leg was very swollen. It's been like that for a couple of weeks. She wasn't in any pain and she was walking on it fine so I just thought it was swelling from a torn muscle. When the swelling didn't go away, I took her to the vet. In the back of my mind, I knew what it was and that's why I didn't want to bring her sooner. I know it's bad but I just couldn't bare to hear what the vet had to say.
It's a tumor. Probably cancer. Probably fibrsarcoma. I am a wreck. I haven't stopped crying since Saturday. There is still a small chance it's a benign tumor so for now, I'm holding on to that hope.
The vet took blood and I'll get the results today. They want to make sure it hasn't gone to her organs or anywhere else. From what I've read, this type of cancer does not spread. However, because of the size and location of the tumor, we may be limited with our options for her.
So, please keep Sara in your prayers. She is such a lively 10 year old. She acts like she's 2! I just can't live without her. We've been through so much together.
UPDATE - The vet just called and her bloodwork is perfect!!! Thank goodness. So, the next step is an xray and biopsy. We'll have it done within the next week. The vet sounded a lot more optomistic today so, I'm going to be cautiosly optomistic for now.
UPDATE #2 - It's been a while since I posted and what a roller coaster we've been on. We had a biopsy done on Sara's tumor a week ago Monday. They did x-rays before and her heart and lungs were clear and the tumor was not on the bone.
We got the call on Friday that the tumor is benign. We were beyond thrilled. Then, Monday we took her in for a follow up to get her stitches removed. Well, it didn't go so well. Sara's tumor had gotten bigger since the biopsy and it's pushing through the biopsy location and will not allow it to heal. The doctor also feared that the tumor is hitting a nerve and Sara will lose use of her leg and begin to drag it. She gave us 3 options - amputate, de-bulk the tumor or put to sleep.
We decided to go for another opinion. We love our vet but she's not as knowledgable in greyhounds as other vets and we wanted a greyhound expert. So, I took her last night. Long story short, she fears that there is a fibrosarcoma inside her leg but it was just too deep for the biopsy to get to. Why else is it getting so big. Unfortunatley, the tumor is entwined in her muscles. If we were to de-bulk it, it would be extremely painful for Sara, they wouldn't be able to get all of it and it would just grow back. So, she suggested amlputation. I have been ready for this and we are going to go ahead with it tomorrow. It's only in her leg and if we remove it, she will be fine. Greyhounds do great with amputation and she has nothing else wrong with her.

I scheduled the x-rays and biopsy. It will all be done on Monday.

So, today is her biopsy. I'm so nervous and now I have to wait another 5-7 days for the results. I just can't wait to get her back home tonight.

Although it's a sad thing for her to go through, I'm so glad do hear how positive you are about what has to be done. I've heard the same thing about amputation, and she appears to be in great shape besides so she will probably recover a lot quicker than you will emotionally.
Keeping you both in my thoughts, hoping for an uneventful procedure and recovery.

My GF ha a pit and he had his front paw amputated. He does great.
I just want you to know your doggie will be ok. They really adapt.
I'm really sorry this is the case though.
