Condition 'grave' after tragic accident by Queens school

A 63-year-old Queens teacher lay near death yesterday after she stepped between two parked cars and into the path of a BMW during her lunch break, police and witnesses said.
Roni Futoran, a fourth-grade teacher at Public School 200 in Flushing, walked outside about 10:50 a.m. and tried to cross 164th St. just a few paces from the building. Tires screeched, students ran to the windows and then several teachers poured from the school.
"I saw a woman under the car," said Dalia Korine, 62, who lives near the scene of the accident. "She wasn't moving."
Futoran of Woodbury, L.I., was dragged about 20 feet near Jewel Ave. Paramedics took the grandmother to New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens where she was in grave condition after suffering multiple head injuries.
A neighbor talked to Futoran's son, who said her condition was bleak. "He said she's not going to make it," the neighbor said last night.
Sources said Futoran's family would soon have to decide whether to remove her from life support. Several relatives gathered at the hospital and her daughter, one of her three adult children, was on her way to Queens from the West Coast.
"She was a good teacher," said Tanya Butler, an assistant teacher at PS 200. "The kids were everything to her."
The driver of the green BMW that hit Futoran got out of his car after the wreck and stared in disbelief, as he balanced himself on a cane, witnesses said. He was questioned by police but not charged with a crime.
Teachers union officials said Futoran was hired by the city in 1991 as a substitute teacher. She began working full-time in September 1999.
Her students, who were offered grief counseling at the school, described Futoran as an instructor who had the ability to make learning science fun.
At dismissal, several students wiped away tears as they left the school.
"The teachers told us to stay in the classroom and not to move," a sixth-grader said. "I started crying because she was my favorite teacher."
