Re: Please share your experiences BFing your second child?
When you first breastfeed, the cramping is much more severe. I'm sure you already know that breastfeeding helps shrink the uterus back to normal size. I have a uterus made of steel. I had two kids no need for an epidural. When I fed Maddie for the first time in the hospital, I was ready to snap DH's head off if he didn't get me painkillers IMMEDIATELY. My cramps were very bad & I wish someone told me it gets more painful with each child so I was prepared.
It was easier because I knew what I was doing. Less anxiety about it, a calmness, if you will.
However, having a toddler who wants attention & tells Daddy to lift up his shirt to feed the baby definitely impedes breastfeeding.
My first was on exclusive breastmilk (bf'ing & pumping) for 8 months & I bf'd until 11 months.
My second was on exclusive breastmilk (bf'ing & pumping) for 5 months & I bf'd until 8 months.
It's a difficult balance - having 2 kids & breastfeeding, but definitely not impossible. I have a friend who breastfed her youngest until she self-weaned at the age of 2.5 yo.

I agree with Barb that the cramping in my uterus te second time was bad... Not to scare you, but I totally didn't expect it. Luckily, motrin helped a lot...
I did not find it challenging at all in a sense that my 2 year old was very independant and gave me the time I needed. I did however suffer from a kidney infection, and was hospitalized and then on meds, so BFing didn't work out past the first month, but I would have done it for a year if I could have. I BF my first for 1 year.

So far it's been 3 months and I have had a much easier experience this time... I'm guessing it's b/c I knew what to do/expect, etc...
I barely had any pain, sore nipples, engorgement... 1st time around all of that was so bad...
The cramping wasn't terrible either...

I never realized the bad cramps were from the second - but that makes sense - i had them too.
It's better in that you know the procedure etc.
It's worse in that DC#1 is sometimes demanding. We bought a lot of Thomas engines to give to play with during those times.

I had the same expereince but the cramping was pretty bad for me. I was counting down the minutes until the next does of motrin in the hospital. It only lasted though for the 2 days I was their. I only nursed DS for 6 weeks because it just wasn't working out. He was a lazy eater and then I had mastsis that it was best for me to stop for my sanity. DD on the other hand was a champ and latched on right away. I EBF and we are at 7 months right now. I feel it is so much easier to BF because I always have 1 free hand. DS is 15 months older that DD so he still needed me to do things for him.
